To be fair it is an extended warranty, so it's not really on the dealer to worry about it, IYSWIM. But anyway, it's nice to stay mobile whilst they fix a bug in the car at no cost to me.

When I had my Merc warranty I had a like for like car each time free of charge.

I had a C-class courtesy car when I took my C-class in for a service at a main Merc dealer. I think I paid £10 to be covered by their insurance.

BMW dealers have always given me a courtesy car free of charge - all you have to do is ask. If you say you need an automatic you're less likely to get a Mini.

I've always been told by BMW I have to pay the £14 insurance charge for a courtesy car. I don't think I ever have though as they've always just waived it.

Previous Merc courtesy cars I've had from other dealers over the years were:

C Class x2
A Class
SLK

The SLK was a surprise. It wasn't even a derv.

BMW dealer locally are partnered with Enterprise who seem to mostly have Volvos but it’s always been for free.

Picked the 240 up yesterday From BMW after being in for some warranty work. They gave me an X1 to run about in. Didnt charge for insurance - even added Mrs A to their insurance - When i was in to pick it up yesterday i got a proper coffee from a barista machine and a Toffee Crisp whilst i waited on them bringing my car round.

Which seems to be fixed (Dash rattle).

Bro-in-law had an X1 for short term company car. I did like the steering wheel...but other than that I'm finding it difficult to say much positive about it.

My first experience of aftermarket warranties is not the greatest. BMW diagnosed the gearbox as broken so gave a quote for replacing it, now the warranty place want to send it to another gearbox place to strip it down to see exactly what’s wrong. My issue is that they have said the strip down is to find if it’s a legitimate claim. I asked what constitutes an illegitimate claim and she couldn’t really tell me.

So I have a risk of them trying to weasel out of it and leaving me with a bill.

Warranties seem more hassle than they’re worth.

The general consensus is that if you don’t go with the official manufacturer backed extended warranty you need to be prepared to deal with all sorts of shit to get a claim through.

yeah well i gave them an M240i and they gave me a base model FWD 1.5 diesel X1. It was never going to be comparatively good.

As a yard stick our 318d touring is just a much better thing. Handles better, seats are comfier. On a positive note that new 3 cylinder diesel is actually a quite impressive unit. Its very quiet and has a decent slug of torque. Felt possibly a bit quicker than the 2.0 4 banger in the 318d - that may be due to it having the ZF-8 versus our 6 speed manual.

My warranty co. (RAC Platinum) are adamant that they're only going to pay for one gasket, no skimming and a % of the labour for engine removal on my subaru. Which will leave me with a bill for everything else (timing belt, torque converter parts, heads skimmed etc. labour). I didn't choose the fucking warranty, it came free with the car but even at no cost it's not worth having.

Possibly apocryphal but I'm sure I read a story of an engine lunching itself due to a broken big end bolt, and the warranty company insisted their liability was limited to replacing the bolt, and not the subsequent lunching.
