Some cars have a voltage cut on the ecu so even if the starter spins it over like a monkey funkier if it drops below 10,5 volts it won’t tell the ecubto fire the injectors for example.

My old 500e does it.

Dave!

Out of interest, how swarfy was the oil out of the Lupo? Rebuild etc.
I haven’t actually asked, I’m popping down there at some point this week so I’ll find out then.

JonMad wrote: Tue May 28, 2019 9:50 am Sounds like it's turning over the starter ok, so I'd suggest not the battery. But I'm clueless so that could be 100% misleading advice. You're welcome :)
Once the car is going though, everything is fine
Would imply battery then - if you only drive a mile each way it’s not getting enough charge to replenish what it uses starting the car.
One long and enthusiastic “Italian tune up” later, we’re back in business

A reasonable excuse to WFH for the day. Manual release is easy to get to and will let me put fuel in again. The actuator is consistently locking the cap but inconsistently unlocking it again. Will try some WD40 on it.
WD40 8-) Fuel cap lock seems to be working normally again.

And this arrived from eBay for the Fabia. My neighbour spotted the front lower grille was missing so this might not be a bad idea. Hopefully it's the right one. Worth a go for £12 posted.

Fabia makes a great station car. Small enough to be easy to park. Dented and cheap enough that I am less concerned by parking it at a station. And the massive NVH wakes me up in the morning. Ear defenders make it more pleasurable.

The new engine mounts arrived yesterday - great service from Type911 !

Nice easy job fitting them too. The old mounts had clearly been leaking for some time.

With just the n/s replaced it was quite obvious how much the old ones were sagging.

I drove it to work today and it definitely feels different. More solid. Perversely, I'm not sure I like it. I think I'd got used to the engine moving about a bit and assumed it was part of the "911 character", and learnt to use it to give a bit of weight transfer. I think it's stopped doing that now :?

I'm also not sure I've noticed an improvement to the gearshift, which is something other people have raved about. And somehow the steering feels heavier now. That's quite odd.

The noise from the gearbox bush insert is still new maybe that is colouring my impressions. I'll try taking it back out again so I can isolate the effect of the engine mounts.

Been considering this for a while, although struggling to get a misfire sorted, i think i need to get it on the Porsche diagnostics as keeps coming back ti the maf, but its been replaced, as has the coils, plugs, the ecu has been tested as well :?

Same here. I've been thinking about RSS semi solid mounts for a while but haven't bitten the bullet just yet.

There seems to be more movement in the drivetrain than I initially remember - particularly when coming off the throttle at low speeds. I was wondering whether it could be driveshafts but I guess it could also be the engine mounts letting the motor move around. My gearshift is also often recalcitrant 1st-2nd (though it sounds like you haven't noticed any difference in that regard and its known as a foible with the boxes on our cars generally).

Some of the Boxsters for sale very obviously need new mounts (actually likely gearbox given their configuration) with the exhaust sagging maybe 4 or 5 inches too low.

One of the best handling improvements you can make is mounting the big heavy bits more solidly. So many Elises have dangerous mid-corner lurches due to soggy perished engine mounts. One of the best upgrades I made on mine was solid engine mounts.

New mounts made a massive difference to my e36.

Mainly because they stopped the engine falling over and jamming the exhaust manifold against the steering shaft and locking the steering during enthusiastic left hand corners

I remember when my brother first lowered his first car, a Hillman Imp. He fitted wide minilites and some daft springs that sat it on the floor. It meant you couldn't break and steer at the same time as breaking caused the front wheels to jam in the arches.

You'll probably know offhand Steve, same on the E46 six pots?

It would certainly explain why they're £60 a pop...

I don't know for sure but the E36 certainly did so I'd be surprised if it didn't.

And £60 ? Just be glad it's not a Porsche - £200 each for genuine ones !

Yeah, oil filled mounts aren't that uncommon, not in more premium cars anyway.
