I just watched this. It did not disappoint!

Bros were on The One Show recently. I was amazed at how serious and intense they were. You’d think they’d changed the face of modern pop music rather than being a throwaway manufactured band for 10 minutes. I mean, do they know they’re a complete fucking joke?

Watched Peter Jackson’s They Shall Not Grow Old last night. Fuck.

I don't know if I'm up to watching that.

I think you have to. I always felt like I’ve had more knowledge of WWII because my grandparents lived through it. My Grandad was in the Royal Engineers in North Africa and Italy, whilst my Grandma’s house was hit by a flying bomb (whilst she was at a neighbours house) there was a sense of realism about it for me because I could talk to the people that lived it, plus the 40s felt relatively modern to me as the rate of technological change was huge. But WWI just felt so distant. This documentary changed all that for me. Suddenly it felt real.

I think that's what I'm most scared of frankly. Every thing I've ever read about WW1 just sounds absolutely, inhumanely abhorrent and although I'm a big believer in "to ignore the past is to repeat it" this only applies to me saying it to other people.

Magnum reboot

Nostalgia made me watch the first two out of curiosity and it is as you expect - like the similarly re-imagined Hawaii 5-0, it is run of the mill, inoffensive US TV you could watch with your kids... (much like the original I suppose... )

May just be worth watching for the re-imagined Higgins...

I've watched the first couple, still undecided, although the new lady Higgins adds a new twist. New Magnum doesn't have the charisma of Tom Selleck IMO.

I've just finished watching it and it was intense and emotional to say the least. The only thing that bothered me was adding vocals to silent film. I didn't feel this was necessary with the stories being told all the way through. Adding sound effects for artillery and small arms fire was fine as it added to the intensity. Colour really added something too.

Should be compulsory viewing at school.

It was shown at my kids’ schools. Think it’s been shown at all of them already.

100% agree that They Shall Not Grow Old should be compulsory viewing, such needless brutality.

Russian Doll - The best show I've seen in ages.

Nightflyers - Started this last night, it feels like 2001 crossed with Event Horizon. Enjoying it so far.

I’ve also got They Shall Not Grow Old downloaded to watch, but with every passing year of my life I seem to find myself welling up more and more at anything involving war or things (humans or cats/dogs) dying, so its going to be a tough watch. One of my Dad’s uncles was killed in WWII and is buried in one of the Commonwealth grave sites in Holland, he was 20 years old and as part of researching the family tree he managed to find a letter home from one of the commanding officers which described what happened to him - his team of 20/30 young men, all fresh to the battle field were wiped out by artillery in the space of 20 minutes.

Watched this a couple of weeks ao when it was on BBC2.

I recall these are talking about the same guy - the guy crying for his mummy was the one who'd had an arm and leg blown off, with the guy talking describing how he had to shoot him, and with his voice welling up as he described it. That's one bit that really sticks in my mind from the film as well.

Anyone watching Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars?

Only just discovered it; Pritchard is a plank and not likeable, but I enjoy the programme, particularly the bits where they showed craftsmen doing their things (interior trimmer, restorer, alloy wheels makers etc).

Bit like Wheeler Dealers in its heyday I suppose.

Catch up series two on Quest OD.

Drew Pritchard is brilliant on Salvage Hunters (and there’s load of series to prove it), but he’s kind of pointless on the car show, despite having been in business selling cool cars on the side for years.
