Really? Seems fairly shite TBH.

What engine is it, M52b25?
M54B30 - Beany posts that he has a 330i roughly 9 times a day, how did you not know?!

I knew he had a 3 series with a foldy roof, my enthusiasm did not extend beyond that. It seems like shitey MPG though.

Probably about what I'd achieve as a maximum with my newer N52

Indeed, and indeed.

I do spend a reasonable amount of time wanging it through the gears to innappropriate speeds, and cruise around 80 (which is a bit over 3000rpm) so again, mix that in with grumbling around rush hour london traffic...

Blimey. My 6pot turbot BMW will do the same and return mid 30's when I go to London. 8sp ZF will make a big difference on mine I suppose, but still 27mpg sounds rubbish. I'm sure the old XJ8 did similar after I'd bought it in London and come home.

That looks great 8-)
You say that, but the lonely gauge in the top right of the centre console section would do my nut. Needs another in the top left, for balance. Anything - barometer, compass, distance to the nearest Greggs....
 That's the fuel level gauge, the Stack/Lotus one is a bit tricky to get working so I threw this in there. I can't say it's bothered me but I might stick an AFR gauge next to it at some point, or one of these.

My one is the older car with the five speed, not six speed manual too - so no long top gear to help with cruising.

Why did you buy the wrong car?

Is the six speed a close six or another gear stuck on top of your five?

I bought the right car - have you looked at a facelifted E46 front end? Eeeew, so fussy.

As for the gear ratios - clicky for linky
Presented in a slightly more readable manner:

Code: Select all

Gear	5 speed ratio 6 speed ratio
1:	4.21 4.35
2:	2.49 2.5
3:	1.66 1.66
4:	1.24 1.23
5:	1.00 1.00
6:	- 0.85
R:	3.85 3.93
F:	3.07 3.07
Cutout 6500 6500
It's an overdrive on the same final drive ratio, so yes, it will makes a difference on a run, and a noticable amount given the different in reported MPG between NSLs and 50 limits. Won't help in town when peeling out of junctions and WOTing it up sliproads though, obviously

I'm ok with the facelift :?
I wondered about the gearing because, for example, the Lupo GTI 6 is slightly shorter geared in top than the 5.
I guess a 6spd conversion is now on the list :P

Nah, most my my driving is local and on long runs, it's alright really.

And if I stop being a lazy fucker and walk to work, fuel costs would be a non-issue really.

28mpg av on my high powered 2.0l 4 pot. Mostly country lanes, fighting the savage torque steer.

The slushbox auto Jag 3.0 gets 30mpg on the Oxford - Cambridge run, which I was feeling bad about but I was speaking to my dad and it transpired his 1.6 Focus auto gets 28 mpg

I can only assume he drives by planting his right foot firmly to the floor and shifting the box in and out of neutral at random.

Bonkers. My dad used to have a 1.6 Focus and used to get 50mpg on a gentle motorway run.

Makes our family car seem positively frugal

We averaged 60mph back from Scotland, long stints at 95 which was just under 3000rpm and did close to 21mpg, that’s fully loaded with a roof box. My brother in law sold his silver 330 convertible 6 speed as the fuel economy was so bad.

Is the regular 330 that bad normally? My friends 530 pre-facelift was pretty good on fuel.

Going by the on board computer the Vito is doing 44mpg around town, the 1 litre turbo Focus 42 and it's been that long since I last drove the mx5 that I can't remember. Oh and the motorhome does around 25mpg.
