X5 had its end of warranty check and MOT today. No issues. Looked at BMW warranty: £1100 full or £710 driveline pa, or £109 or £69 respectively on pay as you go (no limit on time). Anyone taken it out?

I also learnt that the M4 has a touch-sensitive screen, which means Apple CarPlay is an option; anyone used it and thought it was better than the standard BMW format?

How has the car been to date? I never extended my Merc out of the factory 3 years as bar a parking sensor nothing went wrong on it.

Had it been a nightmare I may have kept it on..

Evora Serviced, only needs a new side indicator for £45, which isn't bad considering its a fairly large, LED unit with "Evora" on it - I was expecting more like £100+

However, I also had the gearbox oil replaced with Motul MTL and it's made a massive difference to the feel. Much smoother, slicker and overall better feel. I'm suprised, considering the old oil is only 4 years/15k old. It doesn't change my opinion that the Evora gearbox is still a bit shitty....but it's now less shitty

Ian, I had the Driveline cover on my second 545i Touring. I’d previously had Comprehensive cover on the first 545i Touring. There’s a lot which isn’t covered by Driveline, obviously, but it paid out for a new gearbox. Only just though; the limit is £5k and it would have been nearly £5,500 but the garage did me a discount.

I’d go Comprehensive while you can, but maybe up the excess to £100 or even £250 if it’s been problem-free. And take breakdown cover off to keep the cost down.

All of that. Driveline on our 330i but only ever used it for rear wheel bearings. However, Comp on the 125i and it had a new cylinder head and then turbos. Was a near 5 figure Bill I think.

Thanks for the info gents. The quotes are with £250 excess (max) and no breakdown cover. I guess it’s like all insurance: waste of money until you actually need it!

X5 has been the most reliable car my family have ever owned, nothing has broken on it in almost 100,000 miles. Bit of a shame it will fall victim to ULEZ as the new one looks like rodent like.

I think I'm going to sell my MX5. It's not used enough and I don't really have the space to add more cars without getting rid of one (with a wife who has two cars, one stepson at home who has a car and a stepdaughter who turns 17 in 8 months' time). If I sell it I can indulge in buying and selling things which catch my eye. I'd also like my second car to be something I feel comfortable leaving at the station in town; it's not a noted car thief paradise but there's basically no security on the MX5, just door locks and the ignition key.

In other news, my Volvo is telling me to book a service, but it's over 2 months until it is one year old so I guess it's set from the factory to warn you 12 months after the build date. I'll ignore it until as late as possible (July) so the second service isn't due until after I've handed it back.

As I have discovered with my wife's S60, Volvo servicing is every 12mths. This seems odd in the age of condition based servicing.

I would have something written by the dealers as a Qashqai owner (I think) voided his warranty by being a few months late as he thought it was 12 months since he bought it, not 12 months since it was registered. I think it was a post on Pistonheads which mentions it ?

My Volvo was registered a day or two before it was delivered, so I don't have any concerns there. Seems to be a common theme amongst Volvo leasers on PH. Much like leased VWs always seem to demand a service after a year even though they should be on long-life service intervals.

My Polo didn't. In fact I phoned VW at about 20 months and 16k miles into ownership to ask when the fuck it needed servicing. It's completely condition based and didn't have it's first service until 21m / 17k. I guess this is in no small part why my maintenence inclusive lease is so cheap as they probably knew it's need 1 service max in 36m. However, I'd imagine they didn't factor on it needing 2 sets of tyres and brakes.

UPDATE

E53 X5 4.8is

8 new coilpacks and 8 new plugs fitted. Faults cleared and haven't returned. Runs so sweetly now, in fact it's lost some of the gruff grumble and rocking it had that I liked. It sounds so crisp now though and pulls cleaner. Parts were over £400, it's great running cheap old cars.

It's now got a horrid rattle in the exhaust though. I think using it with the misfire has burnt at least one of the cats out and bits of it are stuck in the exhaust. Going to Owen garages tonight to use a ramp and get the exhaust opened up to investigate.

Presumably that golf with the collapsed suspension is next on the list to be fixed.

Ha you joker you. That's it at the 'sensible driving height'. Aired out it obviously sits on the floor. I've seen it about loads but have never met the chap before. Was surprised for some reason to see he was an old bloke like me. Turns out we knew loads of the same people through cars, he'd had loads of MK2 Golfs too. Spent a good few hours chatting to him while our cars were there. He described in deatil how arch gap offends him and how he can't own a car with standard suspension. He'd just slammed his wife's new Q3. Kindred spirits.

I stopped to collect dinner on the way back, quite liked this view from the food shop.

Bought a centre arm rest for the MINI as I have a plan that one day we are going to drive it to Spain which will be fun

Had the Golf up in Masham and surrounding area last weekend which was quite good. https://photos.app.goo.gl/DNPJs844ZEf1h6C48. After a year its still not the most exciting car but is amazingly capable. Can't think what to replace it with as only another 11 months left to go.
