Kids/dogs etc. all get a verbal warning when entering the vehicle. If they choose to proceed then it's their lookout.

I believe this covers me as as far as the law is concerned.

Leeds -- London - OBC reckons a touch over 30mpg, which ain't bad given there was a 20 mile b-road detour where i spent most of my time just fucking caning it before getting back to the motorway, then crawling through London school run traffic etc.

Expecting the trip up to be less eventful.

Well, other than the London part. My experience of driving through Friday night London traffic is that it tends to be utterly fucking shit, especially the whole 'all of Islington is a 20 zone' crap.

Er, I mean, BAD MITO.

Anyway, trip back up was as uneventful as you'd imagine, although I did lose my patience with a few 65mph --> 63mph overtakers and bang it through to the top end of fourth gear a few times. Well, quite a few times, actually.

And I did a full bore clutch dump out of the petrol station which was fun. I mean, got to get up to speed for the motorway, right?

28mpg all in. Not bad given the crawling around Leeds, crawling around London, then hoofing it around Leeds at night when it was empty

I'm thinking the sub-30mpg is less about anything wrong with the car, and more about the fact that I'll just pin the throttle wide open at any given opportunity without really thinking about it. I mean, those 400 miles are at 45p/mile so it's sorta free

It’s been clutch morning here. Nice and easy with the engine out of course. Out with the stock 215mm dual mass, in with a UUC lightweight 240mm single mass from an M3. It all bolts straight in. I do love BMW parts interchangeability!


Rather overkill in the Compact of course but it was a decent price and I fancied giving it a try. It’ll be easy enough to sell on if it’s awful.

That leaves the 318 engine ready to go in. This afternoon’s job is removing the engine from the 316. If I keep up the momentum I might have it up and running by the end of the weekend.

195/65/15 Kumhos are way bigger than 185/65/15 Yokohamas. They sit OK on my 7” rims.

Got my “6 months to go” letter for the Golf. It’s got me seriously considering my options.

Current thinking (which changes daily):

- Keep Golf another year if they offer a decent deal (I do like a change, though)
- RS6 Avant (the V10 twin turbo mit exhaust and remap) (Expensive to buy and run and possibly not “fun”)
- 996 3.6 C2 (Depreciation free and usable but not practical)
- 996 C4S (Depreciation free but might be a shame to daily it)
- Toyota Crown Athlete estate (cheap option but chintzy interior and old school slushmatic gearbox)

Although there is a theme, you're a bit all over the shop. Methinks this calls for a poll. That way we can all decide for you.

Edit: it isn't legally binding, but if you dare do anything other than argue that it is the will of the people and no other option exists, you'll be called all manner of nasty things.

Sounds mental to say, but would an RS6 V10 twin turbo with 572bhp offer much more over the Golf? Given the potential for headache/bills..
