I think the “face masks in shops” rule will actually end up stopping any second wave. Not necessarily by stopping many transfers in the actual shops, but just by serving as a constant reminder for social distancing, etc.. without that we’d all be completely back to our old normals within another month I reckon.

Plus even when a vaccine is produced, it will take a long time for enough people to have had it, so we’ll still need to keep up social distancing - even those who’ve had it.

So it seems that my mother-in-law and brother-in-law now have ‘it’. My mother-in-law does some cleaning for a lady that was recently diagnosed. Which means recent contact, right? She was told not to come and clean whilst the lady is still ill. But she doesn’t do the sensible thing and isolate for a couple of weeks just in case, but rather carries on her life and even goes to a family BBQ the other day. Now she has symptoms, as does my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. It’s not certain but it’s too much of a coincidence not to be it. She’s gone for her test today so we’ll know shortly. I wouldn’t be surprised if other members of the family come down with it. My sister-in-law’s husband is black and a bit overweight. I gather he’s not impressed with it all.

My wife is pretty fed up with them. I asked why she didn’t isolate, or wear a mask, or do all the distancing that is fairly common sense. She said, ‘because they don’t f@£ing care’. Not many over there take this seriously. Bolsonaro isn’t the cause of this malaise, he’s a symptom. The Brazilians, according to my wife, just don’t like following rules. It’s not an economic problem, a class problem, or even a political problem; It’s a cultural problem.

A couple of weeks ago their city’s hospitals were full of cases from over-flowing neighbouring cities’ hospitals. There’s certainly little to no spare capacity in the system right now. I hope she gets better of course, but right now I’m too busy facepalming to even try and talk to her.

Dr Loke said the way PHE collects data means ‘no-one with Covid in England is allowed to recover from their illness’. ‘A patient who has tested positive, but successfully treated and discharged from hospital, will still be counted as a COVID death even if they had a heart attack or were run over by a bus three months later’ he wrote. He said this ‘statistical flaw’, which only applies to how out-of-hospital deaths are being counted, explains why England’s daily death toll is still much higher than neighbouring regions. It is not clear how many community deaths may have been recorded in this way.

Well well well.... who would have thought they made the figures up?

This whole having to wear masks from the 24th is a bit late and going to get more people shopping on line which is a disaster in itself.

At least people aren't scared to travel on planes for their holidays.

You’re going to be a bit behind the times when all your news is from the recycled Daily Mails at the train station

Did you hear about all those people caught on a cruise ship? Apparently this corona virus might turn into a big issue

And on one day last week, the official figure was pulled, then from the following day it went back to being published as normal. Clearly not sufficiently wrong to bother recalculating the figures (which did happen earlier on).

You two make me laugh - here to snipe at every post. So about masks - who is happy to wear them everywhere - I am not. It will stop me going out to the shops.

No, I get that you can order online - what I mean is, why can't you wear a mask? Just personal preference?

(not a barb, just curious - what with anxiety etc I found a mask to be horrible for about ten minutes till I started flirting with a checkout girl and then I forgot I was wearing it ;) )

It’s going to make me less likely to go shopping.

It’s already a faff, and adding another barrier makes it worse.

Its just a massive joke really. You can go into say an Indian restaurant that does sit down and takeaway meals. If you are dining in - no mask - if you are collecting a takeaway - mask.

I have been and sat outside pubs having a coffee with friends and the table service works well - now, they serve food to take away too so what happens in that situation? Zero thought gone into any of this and made up on the fly by people who don't live in the real world.

Does seem a bit silly that you can go and sit in a pub socialising for hours without a mask but have to wear one to wander around Tescos on your own without going near anyone.
