I was never told apart from the news that the factory had authorised a new short engine to be fitted and wanted mine for 'investigation'. The circumstances at the point of failure were I was doing 30mph in third under a light load and suddenly heard a major clattering noise... The Porsche recovery chap was a diamond though He drove me 10 miles out of his way to drop me off at the pub of my choice then took the car in! The Nottingham dealers Allowed me to reject two loaners (BMW and Merc) on account of them being autos and against my religion. They got me a Cooper S for a week and apologised about its loud paint scheme.

This is a slightly terrifying read! Which of the three (gremlins aside) was most fun, out of interest?

Apart from the fact that the 2.7 was my first Porsche and special for that reason, the last one was the most fun really - I bought it to start my retirement with a bang at the time, then realised I preferred Coupes!

I think a lot depends on what you're used to.The facelift 2.9 is probably the best bet, but it's not until you go up to the 3.4S that they feel like a quick car. I've spend time in most variants of 986/987, and it's surprising how different they feel depending on spec.

The only one I owned for any length of time (10,000 miles) was a 2009 Sport Edition with PASM and lowered chassis, 19" alloys, sports exhaust, sports seats, short shift gearbox. Other than the feel of bucket seats there was nothing in it between that and a Spider that I did about 600 miles in (unless you are regularly going to track it and like a noisy inconvenient roof). It's one of the few cars I regretted selling, but I'd stopped driving it daily, hadn't spent a penny on it other than a four wheel alignment when I bought it, and was offered £600 less than I paid for it, so it went.

Conversely I was disappointed with a Cayman S that I had for a few weeks; a completely standard car on normal suspension and 17" alloys, much preferring a 986 3.2 that I'd been in only a few days prior - I was in the motor trade at the time, not just a serial buyer of similar cars.

I'm tempted to buy another if I don't keep my M140i at the end of the PCP next year, but it'll most likely be a 981S.

Test drove it yesterday (great top down weather) vs a 986S and very much enjoyed it. Going to think over things this weekend and make a decision. Managed to haggle a bit on price so looking like not a bad deal.

Personally, at that price range I'd be looking at 996s. Not much difference in running costs, better car, will hold its value better.

Twelve and a half grand for a 240bhp car that does 0-60 in 6 seconds...

You should be able to get a 3.2 S for that (plus the sat nav's been replaced with a chav spec edition and the rubberised coating is peeling off the centre console switchgear. You can do better I think.

On the upside it does have Bose, heated seats and the sports steering wheel which are all nice options...

Yeah, the trim was a bit of a worry but I was able to get a reduced price on the basis of that when haggling. You think the aftermarket nav will hurt it? To be honest being able to plug my iPhone into something is a pretty good deal for me...

My heart will always want the S, of course. That’s still an issue...

And then they had some nice Caymans too...

Have you just gone to your local dealer?

Go on AT/PH, look for good looking cars with well written adverts that sound like they’ve been done by someone who has cherished their car then go and look at a couple of local private sale 3.2S ones. Don’t just limit yourself to whatever crap the local dealer happens to have had traded in.
