Buy something half decent to send your wife and child out in ffs.
This. All of this.
Massively this. FFS 1k doesn't get you much these days and you're not struggling for a quid so get a grip.

Not breaking the bank. low miles cheap insurance and decent DSG box.4 star euro NCAP rating.

Buy a house nearer the school and make them walk.

Just send them on an Uber. Will probably be cheaper than paying for a car, tax, servicing, insurance, accident damage, fuel.
Alternatively book your wife in for some refresher driving lessons.

I do agree with the cretinist child on this one.

+1 for a low mileage Skoda 1.2.
Ours has been faultless for 4 years of mostly sedate short trips and the odd caning/motorway run from me.
edit: or a V8 barge can be had for a grand.

If it’s so hard to find a sub-£1000, small, petrol, automatic car, that you’re relying on others to hunt one out, can you imagine how utterly atrocious it will be when you do find it
Change your budget to £5k, buy something not horrible, and get on with your life. What do you charge per hour at work? How many hours will you spend trying to save money and end up with something awful.
Save that time, and spend the money on a better car
If it doesn’t work out, sell it on for the £5k you bought it for

The 1.2 mit dsg works well in a Yeti, should do even better in a 200+ kg lighter Fabia.
If upping the budget there's always the Roomster; still not too big, with taller back doors and a bigger boot than a Fabia. Earlier ones were available with a 1.6 naturally aspirated engine and a six speed slush auto.
If not upping the budget, and wanting something nearish, how about an earlier Fabia;

What about this - bargain at £200. that would leave you £800 to spend on tyres for the 911

Just have the balls to tell her it’s over and you want a divorce instead of this passive aggressive bullshit.

Not sure how compliant that is likely to be with the upcoming ULEZ

There were a couple of Ignis Sports out yesterday. They were going well. Small & cheap, and fun to drive too.

Ignis might be a good shout. I'd been thinking of the Altos too but they're a bit more expensive.

Perhaps defer getting the trim on your 997 resprayed for the nth time and top up the coffers a bit?

That's already deferred
Main financial drain this year is saving up for the school fees.
Budget for the dinky runabout will likely get inflated somewhat though, as per usual.
