JL speaks truth. The Shogun's are great. A proper road car that will plug away all day long in the mud and rough all the while being pretty bulletproof.

That'd be where my money would go fwiw.

Sadly he now wants a Defender which is the point where I will graciously bow out of the thread until sanity returns.

I see a lot of pro Shogun posts here but they don't seem actually that popular with the diesel offroading set over here.

You need to think hard about what you want to do with it.

Gentle lanes, anything will do.

Anything tougher than that and you have to be sensible. If it was just for off-road work then a Jimmy, Suzuki anything is great. Parts are cheap, low torque engines don’t break stuff, a winch will be cheap and unstressed etc. A standard one, small winch, tyres and rip out any carpets.

Cherokee, Discovery etc take just as much work as a Defender and thinking different is a bit naive. They still need raised breathers, regular transmission fluid changes plus rust a lot worse too etc. Plus anything with an interior or carpets is utterly hateful once they get wet inside. Park it and come back after a month and it’s a mouldy bacteria filled hell hole. Having an interior you can just hose down and leave with a window cracked is very nice.

Also, off road it and leave it and again you will see mechanical problems, water getting in etc which means mechanicals rust etc. If you get s9mething useable for tip runs, picking up building stuff etc it keeps your daily clean and keep your off-reader healthy.

I had water level with my knees when I was driving and it’s nice to not worry about speakers filling up, electric windows, mirrors etc failing, as lovely as they are when you are driving to the pay and play site.

I’d be all over a small Suzuki, rip out the carpets, put rubber mats in, some mud terrains and drive round a 2 ton defender up to its axles

Jimny is probably the sensible option. A winch is justifiable on one too, whereas on a Disco it makes you look like one of the 4x4 Response wombles.

ETA: or the Shogun, so basically it depends which I find first in decent nick at the right price.

A Unimog is the obvious answer.

Then as my first comment, absolutely anything will do as green leaning is easy going. Also there are some lovely Greenlanes in Wales which have a wheelbase limit due to switchbacks so a SWB car is a bonus.

Given how close you are to the flood plain of the Severn, the only sensible answer is an Alvis Stalwart.

I don't know; I think a Jimny with a snorkel would be OK based on that video above

I am fully aware of that, but I am fully aware that we're not Japanese and as a result, we Europeans called the early (and best IMO) versions, an SJ. Jeez, I'd forgotten how pedantic you were!

The guy who fit my winch bumper is a hardcore off roader, he uses a Defender for local stuff but has a Discovery 2 for longer trips to Scotland and France as they’re supposedly just as capable but much nicer to driver on road. I thought it looked quite good with his winch bumper and not too out of place.

You can discreetly fit a winch on a Discovery 3 which looks really smart

When I was looking 2 years ago you could pick up a decent 80’s G Class for a reasonable price (they seem to have doubled since and not many available for sale now...) but I eventually discounted it due to being too slow on my regular motorway drives and got a 2012 Defender so it would be Euro 5 compliant and cope with modern traffic better. Still going to get screwed over by ULEZ though.

Not cheap but you'd not lose money on it and a helluva lot more lovable than a shogun.

Looking at the MOT history I reckon it’s a rot box and has been waxoiled for its most recent MOT and to get an easy sale

Who knows without looking. It's very easily inspected and even if you go down the route of fitting a galvanised chassis as opposed to new outriggers you'll get your money back in terms of value.

I'd take that silly fucking LED strip off the roof though.

Our childminder's husband has a Jimny for greenlaning. Lifted, tyres, winches, roll-bar, lights and the obligatory "if you can read this I'm upside down" sticker. It is supposedly very capable.
