It sounds like I could have a lobotomy and still be more competent than most of the aforementioned stupid question askers; surely to be able to sign stuff off they first need to be able to write their name.

Something we hear a lot, usually from architects when we point out all the flaws in their layouts.
I’m now an “architect” in work, I’ve not put it in my job title because I’d be tarred with the “fucking idiot” brush that all the other architects in our place take pride in ensuring the slander is deserved. My problem is I made a success of a project so it’s now being rolled out across the whole business and hence, needs someone who knows how the whole thing works to over see it and keep the cogs turning.

Anyway, there’s a lot of commonality in this solution to reduce cost and, given the requirements in time, the process can deliver most things which are asked for. The negativity comments come in because for some utterly strange reason our projects have two budgets, one for development to the launch phase and the second budget covers the significantly smaller amount of time required for the launch phase when we shouldn’t be making any changes, just bug fixes.

The guys in the first three quarters of the project do exactly what’s been said in this thread already, they make changes away from the project brief but don’t account for them in the budget so half of the change gets signed off and worked on whilst the other half stalls because they argue the toss over costs. It then goes into the launch phase, the whole show won’t work without funding the remaining project changes because you’ve got half the team working to the new project brief and delivering to that and the other half stuck without funding. As the project passes into the realms of another budget some poor sap gets shafted with an even bigger bill - because it’s now late - and you get into the area of people saying “you’re being negative” when you’re now out of time to deliver something.

Ah, shit Service Description/Handover?
I don't sign those off, meaning the project can't be closed.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s pushing the boundaries in a good way but it involves a lot of teams to make it work. You talk to the individual team managers, explain their teams required actions to them and then they just fail to tell their own staff. Then they complain when it all goes wrong.

The other problem is they ignore what’s actually going on and make up their own version of how it should work and they think it’s up to you to convince them they’re wrong.

It’s a bit backwards, but the mid-understandings and attitude to not learn things properly and make the right thing happen goes a long way to explaining the shite quality that makes it out the door.

I have more stupid IT questions to report, but the bottle of wine I'm most of the way through suggests I should wait till I'm less grumpy before describing them.

Or possibly, in another job.

We'll see how Monday goes. I might just tell the C-levels to go fuck their hats at this rate.

if it takes more than one paragraph per question, don’t worry!
