Elise owners have north Wales (when plod’s not about). Their racing dynamics would be lost on my road

Make it a toll road but base it on time taken.
Sub 1 minute from one end to the other = £1
Every additional minute taken will be a further £10 on top.

That'll sort the wheat from the chavs.

It has been 20 years since I lived in dat der London, but at the time, I was staggered by the lack of knowledge about the rest of the UK, from colleagues who were Essex/London born.

For us away up North it is being told that our taxes should go to a "nationally beneficial" project, like HS2 or Crossrail etc. I very much doubt many people north of Watford see much benefit.

I do agree that the "damned if you do, damned if you don't" attitude is rife in the UK though, just read the cmments about any expenditure by a Council or overnment dept.
Maybe it is just the huge rip off for taxpayers that is the most galling, hand drier example as a case in point. Or NHS staff being forced to requisition what is a £10 phone trhough a contract that charges £100.

Pride before a fall

Silvertown tunnel opened at the weekend, with a £4 toll each way during peak hours (£1.50 off peak), at the same time they slapped precisely the same toll on the Blackwall tunnel. This toll is steep, it means that commuters would need to pay an additional £8 per day to use either of those tunnels. As a result, both tunnels are really clear and quiet, because it seems everyone is trying to use the free crossings at Rotherhite, Woolwich ferry or Tower bridge instead.

I had to go through Rotherhithe tunnel yesterday and the whole area was gridlocked from all directions, and that's during school holidays when it's normally be quieter. So the new tunnel has actually made congestion worse it's only going to be a matter of time before all of the crossings east of Tower Bridge have tolls to balance things out.

I’m sure that’s all part of the master plan.

School holidays seem to start next week round here so it might not be full holiday period yet. Other than that, it sounds utterly ineffectual - great.

Also, if you’re going to build a new tunnel why make the southern portal in almost exactly the same location as an existing tunnel?
