I can't see how it's less of a faff to take the head off. There's minimal chance of dropping anything in an hole if you're using compressed air to hold the valves up anyway - it's only the spark plug hole for the air attachment. Beyond that it's surely all the same work.

I'd be tempted to take the head off anyway, let's you take a look to see if there are any other issues while you're there.

Yeah that does seem a bit strange. If the head gasket is not leaking then I'm strongly in favour of Leaving Well Alone. Always a risk of stripping one of the threads in the head etc.

I'm building up a shopping list of jobs. I'd better drive it a bit first so I can prioritise them.
