I remember when I started contracting and was doing server and network stuff, walking in to the comms room to find two contractors doing lines of coke off the glass top of a half-height comms rack, during the middle of the day....240PP wrote: Thu Sep 29, 2022 4:32 pm I’d say no. I was refused access to a datacentre in Amsterdam for being drunk once. I’d left my laptop at work to go and watch the World Cup in a bar. I cycled back to get it at the end of the night and security wouldn’t let me past reception. They were very polite and Dutch about it and went and got it for me. I was a bit miffed as I wasn’t that pissed and probably appeared even less so, I think they just assumed time of night/football on..

Another piece of context for this thread is that I spent the second half of last week in Turin, and one thing that surprised me was the prevalence of morning/daytime drinking. We popped into a little espresso bar for coffee at 10am, it was tucked away in a corner near the local market and the locals were all drinking. It was quite elegant, port-glass sized prosecco and eye-catching aperols happily being consumed in the same way we'd have a cuppa. Everyone was drinking wine at lunch. It all seemed quite normal, unlike the 8-Ace associations of morning drinking in the UK.

Same in many places in southern Europe I'd imagine. Struck me the first time we went to Seville. To a certain extent, yes. Entertaining customers is a big part of the job as it's the best way to build relationships and grow your network of key contacts. It's good fun too

Yip, I guess its that European attitude towards alcohol which is very different to ours.

Back in the day the test labs at Xerox in Welwyn Garden City had bars in them for friday afternoons, I was told.
I'm not sure high voltage and electromechanical stuff is a good mix with a few pints of bitter....
It was all gone by the time I was working there though

I remember giving a presentation in Roskilde, Denmark, and arrived to everyone sitting down to a late breakfast of pickled herring and akvavit. Lots of akravit. And on the subject of bars in offices, a good friend was an A&R man for a very well-known record label. Their offices were in a Notting Hill town house. Not only was the whole lower ground/basement floor given over to a bar, but they also had a company chaz supply sanctioned by the well-known beardy CEO.

During my early career i *may* have stood in front of a few classes while still drunk from the night before....
Wouldn't dream of doing that now though - foolishness of youth and all that!
Although at one school we did always have a big xmas lunch and we'd have ice cold vodka shots after some prosecco and orange juice cocktails as part of it in our dept.
