I love the example he uses to back up his assertion of hyprocrisy - an event that happened 50yrs ago! I'm not suggesting he might not have a point generally - hard for most of us to say either way tbh

Yeah, like a lot of the insane takes about this it's based on a crumb of truth. That there's an assumption among some of violent threat from black men that other races don't have. However like the doctor who asked what if Will Smith had brained Betty White and killed her, it's taken to a ridiculous end point by people desperate for content.

I guess we'll never know, but I don't think the uproar would have been any different for a white actor. If anything Will Smith is pretty well loved and has played some really popular characters which might get him a slightly easier ride.
If he was to be stripped of the Oscar I might change my view on that, as clearly people have done worse and kept theirs.

He walked onstage on live TV and assaulted someone. And not only still received his award, he was allowed back onstage to do a speech..
Amazing really. I think the Academy are too scared of bad publicity, again.

As for the various takes from people trying to make it about them or their gender or their race... with everything else going on in the world? Just STFU and move on. Its been highlighted as a white issue, a black issue. a racist issue, a male issue, toxic masculinity, symptomatic of x, y & z etc etc. It was a badly-considered, joke aimed at someone personally who clearly took umbrage to it. Why should people just get to do and say whatever they like without any consequence? Just because it happened on live tv amongst very privileged people, its not symptomatic of a societal issue.
Some of the response from Hollywood just sums up everything that is wrong with them which people like Ricky Gervais poke fun at. I hate using the word "woke", but bullshit like the response to this deflects from so many real issues.
The big issue that is has highlighted is the continued perceived worth that everyone has of their own view about a given situation thanks to social media. And as for the amount of coverage it got on the UK news shows, when there's now 4M Ukrainians been driven out their country? Shame on all of those editors.
Get a fucking grip people.

"Woke" probably wouldn't annoy people so much if it hadn't become a catch all for right wing people when they mean "people are making fun of me and I don't like it"

Depends who you're making fun of. Woke doesn't just mean being nice.
