Not that I'm aware of - some '30d engines were also subject to the EGR recall relating to self combustion, so probably just worth a check to see if was one in the affected date range and if so whether it's had the work done.

Steering racks seem to be a weak point. Make sure there are no knocks from it.

Oh yeah - not sure how I forgot that given we had one replaced FOC on the 125i! When I looked into it it was common across most of the models IIRC

Away from BMW for a mo', iirc someone on here ran an A5 2.7tdi auto and regularly/easily got 50mpg from it, so A4 avant?

Just make sure there are no crunches on the gearbox, our 320d was a bit noisy if you were a little slack on the 1-2nd change, nothing crazy but it got worse as we had it. Warranty fixed it though.

Were steering racks ever a recall issue, or just a suck it up item outside of warranty?

I'm not sure tbh. Ours went in for a free service and we got the call to tell us the rack needed replacing but it would be done FOC. This despite not having a warranty at the time.

Which is something else I'd recommend btw, for the relatively low cost. But you'll need to find a <100k model to get it covered and take out on a monthly basis rather than annual.

Don't know about the steering rack, it's not something we've had.

Given it’s meant to be one of the most efficient engines going, a Civic Tourer with the 1.6 diesel. Yes, 6 cylinders is nice but all you hear is wind noise at 70 on the motorway.

If you're putting 25k miles a year on a car, starting with one on 100k miles seems silly. I did look at F31 330ds and they are a very good choice, but being an old man I preferred the interior plastics etc of my Merc, which wasn't any more expensive for the same age and mileage.

I also looked at mk7 Golf TDIs. The GTD holds its value too well to justify paying a lot to put miles on, but a GT comes with lots of spec and you can of course get an estate version:

Agreed - Hence my suggestion of a 320D with 53k on it

A golf is what I have at the moment, albeit a MK5, and obviously it's one of the more sensible options, a 6 cylinder is so much more appealing though. A shame the 250 mercs aren't 6's.

And you could probably fit the Golf in the back of the Superb!

Yeah, I went through the sensible options, tried a Golf (thought that would be your response - I didn't want the same car I had before either, particularly a boring economical version), 330d, C250d, 530d and CLS. You get nicer interiors with the bigger cars but if you're not an old man like me I can entirely appreciate why you wouldn't have one. All roads lead to 330d Touring, don't they

FWIW, the interior of the C-class is nicely designed but the materials aren't that pleasant, but they are really economical - I've heard plenty of 70mpg+ tales.

edit: that was filtering on £9-11k, Engine >= 3.0; Estate; Year >= 2012; <60k miles. It came out as this, which looks lovely, or a white 530d.

I spotted that E-class too - it is lovely (not on its original alloys, though) but it's definitely more an old man spec
