1-Series or the Swift sound good to me.
Surprised you're considering an up! as a family car as the kids get bigger, aren't they *tiny* ?
I can sit behind me when I drive my Mums.
The boot though is a 3 shopping bag boot maximum.
Dave!

Turns out I was thinking of the Lupo
Similar overall length but the up! has a 100mm longer wheelbase which I guess translates into interior space.

Lupo has reasonable interior space too, but a minute boot!

A local garage had a couple of 3dr Swift Sports in so I dragged the family out to take a look. We didn’t drive, just sat in and had a fiddle. Wife likes it, so that’s a bonus, and she liked it in white as well. She wasn’t anti the sporty stuff - twin exhausts, rear spoiler, bucket seats. We could both get a good driving position. Decent visibility inc out the back. All the controls nice and intuitive. Boot small but enough for a few bags. The ‘64 plate one had the better stereo with dab and touch screen sat nav. A bit early for Apple CarPlay? Would definitely want a 5dr for ease of use inc shorter doors, so will keep a look out.

Standard double DIN on those isn't it? Under 300 quid gets you a decent CarPlay compatible headunit if so.

Sister in law has had two Suzuki Swifts. Driven both they were gutless in her spec but i quite liked it. It does the super mini thing quite well.
What about a Polo GTI?

Undeniably quick - iirc Ste was running rings round me at Rockingham in his (vs me in my Megane), though most of that was down to the driver.
Consensus seems to be fast rather than fun.

Nah, probably still looking at the older n/a one, but interesting to see there's an aftermarket specialist out there

Funnily enough the 130i is what I first had my eye on.
If something that size how about a mk5/6 GTI? If it's got to be na then an R32.

Thinking smaller than the Yeti now. I'm all but settled on a Swift Sport. Now just to actually drive one!

Or stock swift

I saw that one on PH. If it was a 5dr I’d have been all over it. The service history shows me what is possible.
Speaking of which, I saw this one today,
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified ... 9093493138
The cheapest on AT for the year, and the highest mileage.
It looked very tidy, everything shut solidly, matching tyres all round with even wear, a few marks on the exterior plastics, a few scuffs on the alloys, but nothing serious. Looked clean underneath. 5dr very practical and we both liked the colour. But a few things put me off
- service history started as main dealer but no evidence of servicing since 48k. Doesn’t mean it hasn’t been serviced but every 9k is the schedule (chain, not belt driven). No evidence of gearbox oil changes - the schedule say 10years but the forums say 3.
- the shut line on the left rear door was sticking out a bit, didn’t match the other side. May have just been an adjustment needed, which they said they’d do, but raised a question in my mind, also as the front left door didn’t shut cleanly if you did it quite softly (other doors were fine)
- front tyres and pads were at the limit. It would be given a new MOT but I didn’t get an immediate ‘we’ll put new tyres on it for you’ if it came back as advisory.
Will look at more expensive and lower mileage ones. At least they’re all the same spec so that’s one less variable.

Seems well priced, probably with that into consideration. Enough to put me off though.
5 door seems a lot more than the 3 probably as there's few of them about. Buy
this

No minis for the Mrs, though that one is pretty nice.
Saw another one, half the mileage, same age, more money, bluer. Full regular history all from the local franchise dealer selling it. Good tyres. Previous owner bought it from them from new and has just traded it in for a new one. A few stone chips on the bonnet that have been touched up and look ok, but nothing else of issue that I could spot. Drove it. Liked it. Deposit paid. Collect it once it's had the latest service and they're also going to change the gearbox oil for me and replace the fairly unobtrusive 'alloy gators' on there with new ones.

For completeness on this thread, I also ended up with new front pads and discs, six months' warranty and 3 months' breakdown cover. Which is what you want when paying dealer prices really, but others with similar mileage were more so pretty happy with this. Hopefully it'll be a giggle.

Swift seems like a super choice.
