I reckon it's possible if the batter is crunchy and firm, if it's a bit more greasy then it probably would be tricky.

I use cutlery specifically for a nice piece of cod or haddock. If I'm having anything else (saveloy and chips, kebab, burger) then I use my fingers. But a properly cooked piece of fish should fall apart and is hard to eat with just your hands. It's also far more likely I'd buy that and take it home to eat, rather than while sitting on a park bench with a bottle of Buckie.

There is a distinction to be made here Mik. Indoors, cutlery is used. Outdoors chippy tea (the best way to eat chips) is with fingers.

I'll throw a spanner in everything by admitting I often add gravy or mushy peas to my fish n chips..

Usually, I was slightly put off when the local chippy started displaying the allergy information and saw that the curry sauce has sulphur in it, that explains the farts afterwards!

Our regular order is 1 large chips (fookin massive in reality) 2 fish, large peas and small gravy.

The chips are split between us and the 4yo, the fish is for us but he gets the crispier bits.

So it has to go on a plate. No point eating it with fingers by that stage.

All of this, including the gravy. Glad to see my boy liking gravy with his fish as well - the wife is very disappointed
