Here’s a lesson for everyone - get your insurance quotes as early as possible (3-4 weeks before you need it) - they jack up the prices (MASSIVELY) on the day/day before.

I had a quote of £418 that I quoted 3 weeks before, I bought it the evening before the AM delivery of the car. The delivery then got postponed so I cancelled it. I called up today to buy it again and the price was now £660.... I politely told them to fuck off (not very politely - I just told them to fuck off).

So, after a bit of internetting I’ve got it down to £548 for the same cover (same company) and I’m on with the leasing company to sort something out as it was their (well, VWs) fault....

Well, the very early quote thing is a lesson learnt for me anyway, I always left it far too late.

Even if you get an early quote it can update by the time you go to buy it. I had that with the 2 series renewal earlier in the month.

Well fair play to VW - they’re refunding the difference in the insurance quotes!

As for the leasing company - I can recommend Thomas H @ Synergy leasing - whilst it’s not been straightforward because of VW, they’ve clearly fought my corner well.

I managed 25 mpg driving like a hooligan around "full bore acceleration 80% of the time Milton Keynes" so there's no reason why you can't get sensible mpg out of it.

I’m a bit mixed on how I feel on the Golf so far, everything seems to have a positive and a negative.

The turn in a SHARP but i still don’t particularly like the feel of FWD and feel far happier/safer in a car that oversteers when you go too far/push the limits than understeers. I think it’ll be far better in warmer times when the roads are grippy.

It’s quite quick, but the noise it makes is crap and it doesn’t have a natural crescendo that tells you when it wants to change gear, it just hits the limit (a little early imo).

I think it looks great, and the little details are lovely - the illuminated red lines on the sills and through the headlights are cool. Plus the actual headlights are excellent (which is massively important in a car imo).

The interior is lovely and stuff like CarPlay is AWESOME, but the seats aren’t as comfortable as BMW ones (even my wife’s 320d M sports ones are far nicer). Once I’d worked out the steering wheel was adjustable in and out as well as up and down the driving position is pretty good too.

I am impressed by the mpg though, with quiet roads this morning it managed 42.7mpg on the journey to work without doing anything too daft.

Overall I miss my M3 (particularly This time of year when the roads are slippery) but do like the golf and being sensible is the order of the day.

I do wonder if I should have been Even more sensible/boring and got a diesel though, because I seem to be obsessed with fucking miles per gallon now...

I wonder how economical the GTD is in reality? 42.7 is excellent.

yeah, I think it was exceptional because of the lack of traffic, but I’m consistently getting 30-35 without trying.

That's not much better than my M140i

Plenty of variables involved - my normal 40min daily journey has no motorways or DCs to improve the mpg and my M3 never managed more than 18 or so doing it.
