It's an expensive country to do anything in and probably half of Europe and all of Asia could do it far cheaper. That's not always the driving force behind helping industry though. Once the skills leave the money leaves, we should be promoting industry and not harming it.

If the numbers for the average low income tax payer are right at £2640 a year, an average oil industry worker pays 6 times that and will have no benefits owed to them. That's a good deal imo for the government purse.

That's before you look at all the micro industries that feed the oil and gas industry.

If you're just talking about job creation and tax revenue it doesn't have to be oil.

We could be funding retraining and encouraging people to start and sustainably grow businesses.

It's easier to just let big capital eat us alive though.

Wrt Aberdeen, it's struggling because all the people who paid the wages fucked off. That's where the wealth is consolidating.

Big capital has given enormous amounts of people a very good living.

It still can as other countries are proving daily.

As someone looking for their fourth new job this year,I can't really agree on that.

Maybe 40 years ago but not now.

I can understand your feelings on the subject more now and hope your luck changes but what's happened to you happened to loads of people in the oil and gas industry. It shouldn't be getting damaged on purpose, all business should have a natural decline when they are no longer needed, not pushed out.

Whatever happens I hope the job market treats you well!!
