I remember looking at both of these in the early 2000's. Almost bought the Skyline (in gun metal grey) for £5995 but rejected it as the boot was too small for a pushchair . The Honda was £12K and would have had to have been financed as it would have been a second fun car. In the end I bought a 3.0 Omega Elite.
In hindsight I should have gone all in and bought both because HOW FUCKING MUCH NOW?!?!

I can't get my head around this car.
Eletre PHEV, 1400km combined range, nearly a full size EV battery, a 2.0l engine that runs as a generator by default but can drive the front wheels under certain circumstances.

I have similar feelings about 944 S2s
There was one going in Scarborough for about two grand back when I had the Puma, needed the sills welding but otherwise looked OK. Should have just got a loan and bought the fucker.
They're not *mad* money now but they're not cheap - and they're definitely second car material at this age, now; I'm sure lots of parts are NLA etc.

i remember looking at NSXs and Clio V6s and dismissing them because they weren’t very fast. they were in the £15-20k bracket, though i can’t remember when it was or what i bought instead!

There's quite a community around the 944 and the parts that are NLA will likely have some good quality aftermarket options. Even with the 928 (which is rarer) there's not a situation where you need part x which is NLA so you're completely screwed. Even bespoke electrical stuff like ECUs, there's repair and refurb options. I've got a mate whose 1982 944 is his only car and he drives it everywhere.

Yeah, I tried to convince myself of that too, but things like two week turnarounds on ECU repairs, older fuel injection systems, etc make me nervous.
That and now, a 944 might feel like a slower, less practical Z4C.
I'll probably still keep looking at them though

I saw a clip from a podcast today with Dario F saying he purchased his F40 in ‘99 for £140k! Bet he’s happy with their value now!

I wonder what 27 years of maintenance/insurance on an F40 has cost? I think it’s safe to say he’s still positive(!) but that’s the only issue with cars, they cost even when they’re sat doing nothing!

On the assumption that there aren't 2 F40's in Scotland ( ), I drove behind Franchetti in his for about 5 miles, way up north near Lochinvar.
Edit - yes I know it might not have been him but I prefer that version of the story...

For a long time I kept a kept a copy of Goo car trading magazine from when I was working in Japan in the early 00s. I could've taken out a small loan and had an NSX or emptied my savings for an FD RX7. Instead I bought a digital camera and drank way too much and now I'm very sad that I don't have an NSX or FD.

Mike at JDS Porsche turned around my MAF repair in a couple of days. He also does ECU repairs. I sent him my Final Stage Output Controller for the radiator fans on the Monday - I had it back on the car by Thursday. For complicated stuff, he'll just send you an exchange unit and refurb yours when he has the time.
The Motronic fuel injection isn't that difficult and there's tons of info out there that make DIY relatively painless. A 944 might be slower and less practical than a Z4C but it's infinitely cooler.

I think a 944 is for when I have space for a second car, really.
After the E46 I really don't need another car that could rapidly devolve into 'project' territory as my daily

Yeah, parts availability for my 968 is still pretty good, I think. The only thing is that the prices of some stuff is crazy.
I get the impression that BMW are getting worse for parts for older cars. I know alot of CSL specific parts are NLA now (which is annoying, but kind of understandable), but I do hear that just standard E46 M3 parts are starting to get discontinued. Bit like you say though Andy, there's a relatively healthy aftermarket options.

I was watching an Olsen YouTube video recently. He mentioned that there is a huge parts availably for any classic Porsche, to the point he can get any part same/next day which is one of the advantages of being an old Porsche specialist. No waiting for parts and fast turnaround times make it much more lucrative than other brands where the cars just waste workshop space.

Several Porsche specialists make good money just buying bits people assume will be hard to find from Porsche then adding their own markup on top

Strangely, the best and usually cheapest place to buy genuinely Porsche parts is your local OPC, especially if you ask for "club discount". Most stuff for the 928 is special order from Germany but it generally only takes 3-5 days. Rose Passion in France have most things too but their insistence on using DHL for everything and import duty (thanks Brexit) means it can get expensive. Garage de Loods in the Netherlands has some nice aftermarket solutions as does Dennis who runs 9zwo8.com in Germany. Design911 here in the UK are OK for aftermarket stuff, but never buy genuine Porsche stuff from them - it'll be marked up 20% and won't be covered by warranty.
