Not that great a car then? Shame they all seem to be wallet drainers one way or another.

I don't think they're that bad. I think the problem is that people treat them like VWs and don't keep on top of stuff, leaving large bills to the next owner, but once you fix things they tend to stay fixed. The 996 is a 15 - 20 year old car now so it's going to take some fettling, but the values are rock solid.

Do you pour £300 a month into a Golf R you have to hand back but won't cause you any running issues, or do you pour it into something that probably won't depreciate and may appreciate if you keep it in good condition and keep hold of it for long enough?
When I was using mine every day it was faultless but within a couple of months of it being a second car parked up or garaged for weeks before runs it started to deteriorate and jobs mounted up.
Skylines are like that. They don't like sitting. If I do get a 911 next, I'm getting a cheap, high miler that's been looked after and to hell with the value, just so I can use it as a daily.

Its an interesting question. I spent a lot on my m coupe at the time so have experience of both. I'd rather have something to jump into that gives me no grief to be honest - plus modern cars do things so well / better with tech you can't compare the two really and they are as quick / quicker.
I definitely subscribe to this view - it's all very well tinkering when you have time (I ran 4 older cars when I worked from home) but when you just want to make sure you get to the station on time each day it's not character, it's hassle.

How many miles did you do in the Coupe though ?

I find it strange that people don’t do many miles in their fun cars, what’s the point if you don’t use them. People seem to want to watch telly more than drive their cars.

What's the mileage on your 500E now Dave?

Seen anything good on telly recently?

That’s a lot more than I remember, I can’t see how that would ever prove dull.

Maintenance costs never worry me, un-reliability though would.

Not sure, I walk to work, my weekends are full of kids activities, I get driving fun from the racing, I am just finding I am having to make excuses to go out to use it- I better drive it as its sat there for a fortnight and its been cold and the discs are looking rusty..

I look at where that money would go- another endurance race car for example and i think I would get more return there :)

Managed 3500 in it last year so I’ve now done about 70000 in it. Sat on 240000 km

45000 in the Defender

10000 in the TT

55000 in the ML

Not bad considering we both don’t commute and 2 cars are tucked up for 6 months a year.

Now the bike, I have no excuse for !!

Dave!

Subaru needs to 2 o-rings in the PAS pump, common problem, 10 minute £5 fix.

Needs a new windows switch or motor for the driver electric window (can wait until spring so I can diagnose it correctly).

Next month I'll fit the exhaust, do the gearbox seals, fit a high flow fuel pump and change the gearbox oil.

Still debating on whether I should upgrade the Turbo before I get it mapped. It should see just over 300bhp with what i have ready now, 340bhp if I fit a Turbo from an STi. That's it then without a total engine rebuild with forged pistons. Either figure should be quick though.

Carl.

For balance, I’ll just point out that my 996 passed its MOT last week with no advisories, having done less than 900 miles since the last one.

Apart from melting the brake pad sensors at Bedford, nothing has gone wrong for ages.

My old Carrera had candle lights; they were awful, as bad as my old Corrado’s headlights. The GT3 thankfully has xenon so one can push on at night without fear. 8-)

Have you been using your Vantage much? I guess the Vantage has become your main ‘weekend’ car now.

Taking the Volvo green laning this weekend with two classic Range Rovers. Turns out the Volvo has similar ground clearance to the old Range Rover without air suspension.

I've ordered an 8T, 5m long tow rope just in case but I'm expecting not to try going anywhere I might need it

Does the Volvo come with terrain settings at all or are you just reliant on Haldex doing its thang?
