Maybe that's what I mean, is there a way to ensure they're friendly and affectionate souls, even if they piss on your leverarch folders* occasionally?


* On Thursday, my neighbour's cat casually walked into my office, meowed at me, and then sprayed all over the leverarch folders on the bookshleves. He's not even affectionate to make up for that fact

Get a rescue.

Our BIG Ginger Tom would like nly come down every so often, get a 2 minute cuddle and then bugger off and relax all day.

Our Persian would want to be near you, was great with the kids and dogs but if another cat came into the garden, would try and rip it to shreds.

Certain cats have certain traits but I think k they are far more likely to have an unswayed individual character than a dog.

No. You may get told that a certain breed is always ok - such as ragdoll. We have quite a few ragdolls, all from the same parents - one or two are very high maintenance, one or two are floppy loving things and the rest swing between the two depending on mood.

But there are some breeds which are guaranteed to be harder work. Orientals (Siamese for instance) can be very needy. And bengals can be somewhat mental.

Yes, wish I’d known this earlier..

I love our snow Bengal but she does have moods where she deliberately terrorises some of the other cats.

Also zero brain cells between ears, as with most cats.

These all sound like good reasons to get more than one cat

My step daughter has a rag doll (I'm currently looking after it whilst she's on holiday) and it's the only cat that's ever attacked me (other than in play). But I'm told it's because when it stays at our house it's not its natural environment. I'm assured he's lovely!

In contrast we have 2 normal cats from a shelter and they're both loving and great with kids. Really is the luck of the draw.

I will add we have taken a cat back to the shelter in the past because it was vicious to our other animals. But generally I would say you'd be unlucky as we've had lots of cats and that's the only time we've taken one back.

Ive done this with a dog as it was trying to aggressively dominate my other dog and actively going for him. It’s heartbreaking but shows that animals don’t always get along, just as humans don’t

I think we might get a cat soon, the wife has been on at me for a long time to get one and I've resisted so far, but it might be about the right time now the daughter is a bit bigger. I just need to maintain a strong negotiating position until I can do a deal on limiting my involvement in the boring/unpleasant stuff and just be there for the good bits.

We've got a few rescue centres round us, so hopefully they'll have one that can cope with a child at some point.

HaHa, I'm not bothered about the cat. I just want the wife to take it to the vets and clean up after it!

Not that the wife respects a strong negotiating position any more than a cat would...
