Steal, lie, run public finances exclusively for your own benefit, dismantle any system of oversight for the civil service or judiciary, lie some more, but most importantly, bully and hamstring independent media so you control the narrative.

It is really scary. the whole "anyone but Corbyn" or "I've always voted Tory and I'm too old to change" type arguments are looking ever more spurious.

Another report from a tribunal today saying Gove's department has to hand over details of tax payer funded research and potentially using tax payers money for anti independence propaganda.

Chesham and Amersham by-election won by the Lib Dem’s with an 8000 majority; reversing the Tories’ 16000 majority in December 2019. That’s a massive swing.

Is this the start of a Tory slide or is it just a blip, though?

Until there is a viable other option I think you're stuck with them for a very very very long time.

You often get a protest vote in a by-election. I don't think the local HS2 and planning issues which have been mentioned are at all the reason for the swing though; I think the reasons are probably:

- How COVID has been handled
- The massive majority held by the Tories meaning it's safe to vote against, but also being misused to grab more executive power and remove checks and balances
- The cronyism of the massive contracts placed with friends and acquaintances

Bear in mind Buckinghamshire as a whole has not had an MP who is anything other than Tory since 1922 and the size of the swing, it could be the start of the backlash.

It's probably a combination of all of that, but I think point 2 coupled with a much lower than normal turnout will have been key.

I wouldn't underestimate how much these planning changes are getting up the back of traditional Tory voters. It's one of the big issues people discuss in my area.

Bear in mind that if the turnout was an average 64% and every single extra voter had voted Tory, the result would have been neck and neck. That's how big the swing is.

Of course, you can't extrapolate on the basis that *every* extra vote would have gone to one party anyway.

Planning changes and HS2 will have a big effect on the decision of a relatively small number of voters; voting decisions when it comes to the polling booth are on the big issues of the day. Which is a particularly damning indictment of Boris's PR, and yet more evidence that opinion polls don't give any real indication of what people will do at an election.

Probably.

I'm seeing this defeat of the Tory's as a very small glimmer of hope.

It's the feel good/best news of the day IMO 😂

I was wondering if there are more gropey revelations to appear in the Sunday papers.

That said, it is insane, insane that Hancock has presided over the biggest death toll in Western Europe, the care homes crisis, etc etc, but what gets him to go is a bit of a fumble in a corridor

Whoah there Leslie. Yes, Boris & Co have done appallingly, but the 'biggest death toll in (western) Europe is a really lazy argument and amazingly there are worse countries as illustrated by the characteristically excellent John Burn-Murdoch:

Ok fair. But it agrees with me that decision making has not been amazing.
