I think George Russell said he discussed it with the team as well, which does seem to go against what the commentators were saying about no comms during the formation lap.

I didn't pick up until the post race that being in the first pit box Merc would have been screwed either way as they'd have been blocked in. The only thing I presume they could have done would be for Hamilton to recognise what needed to be done early and hammer it round in the hope of getting the pit stop done before the others caught up? Although I don't know if there's any limitation on the speed of the lead car in the formation lap as usually they're going as slow as possible.

I looked on Twitter and it seems that the no comms rule only applies to the pre-race formation lap. This also explains why Toto was taking all the blame and standing by the decision for it afterwards. I also thought that it’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t scenario with Mercedes located at the first pit box.

Seems like Vettel’s second place is under threat as he finished the race with less than 1 litre of fuel - hence him also running to the pits

Which is shit. But a long standing rule requires that they need to be able to provide a litre for testing purposes. Crap for Seb but it’s a written and well understood rule.

They’re appealing the decision, so Vettel car will be impounded and held by the fia, this won’t undo the penalty as such, but might force them to look for more fuel for the sample

They quoted the ref no for the extraction technique, so there is clearly an agreed (or at least understood) methodology.

Safe approach is to shape the tank so a litre of ullage remains “in-drawabe”. So you know you can always meet the requirement. Riskier (and more aligned with race team approach) is to manage usage to the nth degree, and take measures risks. Which seems to be the case here (?). In which case don’t bleat when your risk decision turns out to fall against you.

I believe Aston Martin are certain the fuel is in there and just the fia haven’t been able to get it out

Yep, it's harsh, but where do you draw the line on technical infringements? You could stick in a v12 twin turbo or run it on some super duper rocket fuel and leave everyone for dust if it was only a 5 second penalty or something.

Making sure you have a litre left to easy siphon out is surely a very easy rule to comply with.

Maybe they are right and have offered to supply a tech to remove and drain the fuel pump, fuel lines, wring out the filter etc etc. But if that isn’t the normal extraction method, and the other teams are compliant with the rule using the normal extraction method……

It seems really harsh as the rule predates new technology, they now know exactly how much fuel is in there.

I’m more surprised that an entire litre of fuel is required for analysis. You’d think that kind of lab based chemistry would need a minuscule pipettes worth.

it doesn't matter if it's 1 ml or 10 litres, the point is that it's the same for everyone.
