Completely missed this. Sounds like a bargain and looks alright for its age to me.

Go on rev, you know you want to
If the 3.4 blows, then I will. But until then, I’m quite happy with it as it is

I’m pretty confident the 3.4 will be bulletproof* as I’m sure Hartech will have replaced the IMS with whichever iteration is superior (dual row / single row I can’t remember) and despite what RichB Shortz believes, the boxers are, funnily enough, a perfect combo in these cars.

*totally jinxed this now.

Oh, and the coilovers are BC Racing BR Series intended for a 996 Turbo.
Years ago, I struggled like fuck with a rounded off hub grub screw, took it in to a good garage close to where I worked at the time. I told the owner my struggles, so he showed me a nice effective of removing it - he knocked round the screw with a sharp center punch and hammer, it came out in seconds. I've successfully used this technique myself a few times since 👍

I also need a 10mm Allen socket for the caliper bolts too so I’ll have to go tool shopping. What a shame.

I did the so-called red cap mod yesterday which is basically using the cap off a bottle of oil to block off the Helmholtz resonator in the airbox (although in my case it’s a green cap off an empty bottle of wash ‘n’ wax). It’s not the massive difference in sound I thought it would be, but it does sound a bit growlier. Given it cost me nothing other than a few minutes with a screwdriver, it was totally worth it.

The interesting thing is, it’s like the pipework was specifically designed to take a plug: there’s a lip in both the airbox side and the pipe side that don’t serve any purpose but that happen to do a great job of ensuring that wherever plug you use can’t fall into the airbox or get sucked into the engine.

Rev, it might be worth you getting the wheels off to clean in there and getting the underside steam cleaned. I think there are a few places who can steam clean cars round your way. You’ll be able to get a good idea of what the underside is like, any jobs which need doing will be easier and don’t forget take some photos of the freshly cleaned under side and use them come re-sale time. It’s amazing how much you’ll both find out about the car and how fast people will stick an offer in to buy it if they think it’s immaculate underneath too.

Which reminds me: is there any such thing as a long reach low profile high lift jack that doesn’t cost a billion pounds?

It’s called second hand, unfortunately.

Let me know if you find a cheap one, I have to drive onto a ramp to get the jack under and it's not ideal!

I use a scissor jack on the sill jacking point to lift it an inch to get my trolley jack on the proper jacking point but I have to have the angle just right to give me enough room to pump the handle.

I've always just driven onto some home-made ramps from stacks of wood flooring in increasing heights, then got a regular jack under. It's not ideal, but I don't/didn't do it often enough to warrant the cost of those low-profile jacks.

I just drive onto the caravan levelling ramp before I jack it up, I'd just rather have a low jack.

Bits of wood work fine. I bought some of these in the end, they’re lighter so easier to move about, but do exactly the same job as bits of wood.

Got the discs off and found the adjusters. The handbrake shoes weren't down to the metal but there wasn't a lot of meat on them. Followed the book method for adjusting them: wind the shoes out until the disc won't turn, then back the adjuster off 9 clicks. Then, adjust the handbrake mech so that on 2 clicks the discs are just starting to bind. Still won't hold the car on a hill. The joy of old cars. I guess I'm going to end up putting new shoes in.

So, the list of jobs needed, in no particular order:

- Fix handbrake
- Replace accessory drive belt, idler pullies and tensioner pulley
- Track rod end(s)
- Air con
- Heater control screen
- Fit phone mount
- Relocate heater controls
- Fit double DIN Apple Play headunit
- Reupholster steering wheel
- Restore/reupholster front seats

Leave the handbrake alone. Just tie a bit of string to your brick. Sorted.
