Mandy

Nicolas Cage in a cheesy horror gorefest. A proper swivel eyed madman performance from Cage and a suitably bonkers story to go with it. I thought it was great.

Antman & The Wasp

It was alright, I feel like these movies are just place holders so the characters are there for the ensemble ones. Entertaining enough if you like the Marvel stuff though, the post credit scene was pretty good.

Jurassic World : Fallen Kingdom

Nah, it wasn't very good.

I quite like WW but I'm glad others agree about BP. A nothing film, crap story. Nicely made don't get me wrong, but yawn..
+1

You're all wrong about Black Panther, worth watching for Michael B Jordan alone.

I just want to see people getting chased by, and eaten by, dinosaurs. Job jobbed. But the franchise has started getting a bit Fast & Furious. Jurassic World (non-Fallen Kingdom) was definitely better.

Aye, I'm enough of a fan that I've seen Jurassic Park 3 or 4 times at the cinema over the years but this one did nothing for me.

I really disliked how it started and then the wacky mansion part didn't really work either. It's probably the worst of the series for me.

The Strangers - a thriller movie from about 10 years ago. Just nasty, really, without any overriding moral or redemption at the end.

There's a French movie called Them that I always thought The Strangers ripped off, it's much better. Still pretty nasty though, it was part of that French horror scene that made Switchblade Romance and stuff like that.

I don't give a fuck how much you liked the first one, if you liked it all - don't bother with this follow-up. It goes from being cliched to turgid to just about OK at midway then a bit confusing then downright fucking weird to fizzling out at the end.

Just avoid it.
I loved the first one, and I didn't actually mind Soldado. Some of it was quite brutal, I thought the the scene when they were in the convoy (even though you knew what was coming) was done well. The plot was a bit all over the place, I agree, I didn't understand the point of the bombings at the start (other than the shock factor).

But yeah, I didn't mind it at all.

I rewatched Drive (2011) over the weekend, just because I remembered how awesome the intro was. Once again, not disappointed even on the second viewing. Great film.

Yeah, a nation with unlimited resources and advanced technology but relies on a fuedal system to ensure they only utilise their advantages to the betterment of mankind. What happens when the Prince is a cunt!? šŸ˜‚

I found it the most disappointing of all that genre, but ā€œWakanda foreverā€ definitely rolls of the tongue well.

Ah I never pay attention to who makes Film music as much as I should but he’s made a couple of my favourite recent scores. Mother (which is also a tremendous mind fuck of a movie) and Arrival were both ace.

If you like Mandy, the director’s first movie is worth watching as well. It’s called Beyond The Black Rainbow, more of a sci-fi horror and a definite first movie feel but it looks great and has a nice minimal electro score.

BP is the Best stand alone non-comedy* MCU movie since, well... Iron Man 1.

*Ragnarok or GotG or rererebooted Spidey boy.

Infinity war OTOH was hopeless, mainly because they didn't call it Infinity part 1 don't expect any resolution War and being about an hour too long.

Define best? MBJ was his usual great self, the rest were merely good. Script was forgettable, graphics were excellent but they should be with their budgets. Story was.. err, I can't remember it was that irrelevant.. This might sound ridiculous given the comic sources for all of these but I found it too far fetched. A hidden tribe in Africa that advanced to that level based on finding a cool metal alone, who then choose to ignore the rest of the continents issues for their own selfish reasons. Just full of holes. Tony Stark you can understand, Capt America similarly.. this lot, not so much.

Maybe the thing is that it was only ever meant to be one of the B string movies to introduce the Black Panther and Wakanda so they could be used more in the ensemble movies, much like Antman. It got a lot of hype because people were (in my view understandably) excited about such a big budget mainstream movie with a mostly non white cast so people expected more from it.

The movie is solid and I really like Chadwick Bosworth as T'Challa, I hope they use him more as he has an interesting dynamic with the rest of the Avengers.

There is an element of weariness about the MCU now as well. They have a niche that they've firmly ground themselves into.

I get that and it's not a bad film in its own right, I'm just a little tired of this panic to shoe in female or non white leads for the sake of diversity rather than on their own merits I suppose. It felt forced. Black Panther as a superhero is very cool, I think he could have felt just as relevent without having to include the back story.

He's a pretty integral character to the Avengers though and if he was the only one to be introduced without his own movie that would've been weird imo, same with Capt Marvel.

I'm just going to glide over the forced diversity stuff because I can't see there being any agreement there :).

ETA I could see the argument that it's demographic box ticking but the characters have stories worth telling and it's nice to occasionally have a big budget popcorn movie not fronted by a white guy called Chris.
