Indeed, maybe more respect due if he came out now rather than after retirement.
Nice gesture on the Silverstone/BRDC side, he genuinely seemed a bit choked up so it must have been a surprise. He does appear to still be suffering from the after effects of Covid, at least as reported by Benson today. Heavy dose from those laydeez!

The only partners I've ever heard of him being in a relationship with are female, so I think I'll stick with the assumption that he's straight until he tells us otherwise. Any other assumption makes no sense whatsoever, and I'd love to know why you've defaulted to something other than what you've seen given you say you've never seen anything in the press?

I wouldn’t say respect, coming out is a big decision and it’s up to the person when they feel ready. It would be good to see more pro sports men coming out while they’re competing in general though. It’s one of the places where the stigma around being lgbt+ is still quite high. It doesn’t seem to be as bad in women’s sport.

Anyway Hamilton has never struck me as being gay, he had a phase of going through a female superstar every few weeks at one point.

You’re right on a personal level of course.
However, we live in a world where the majority will assume that someone is cis-het unless expressly told otherwise. This leads to a situation where some people either feel like they have to keep who they are a secret or feel pressured to come out before they’re ready.
Having someone they look up to come out can help them see that it’s possible. Obviously this puts famous people in the position of possibly being role models which they might not want. Which is why I understand people not wanting to come out until they’re not in the news anymore.
