And the British Indian Ocean Territory, i.e. Diego Garcia. Whose only population is on the airbase. Trump has imposed tariffs on US military personnel.

Of course.
I’ve not verified but:

Anything <=10% gets rounded up to 10% because he can’t admit to having good deals in place already. Those get the default 10% in return. Everything else, the US tariff is exactly (little bit of rounding) half the made up foreign tariff.

I saw on Reddit a link to Financial Times article which says that it it's based on the trade deficit. One of the examples was Bangladesh - US imports $8.4bn and Bangladesh imports $6.2bn. 6.2 divided by 8.4 = 0.738. Therefore tariff = 74%. There was also some suggestion that it's what you get when you ask Chat GPT and it answers when you ask it for a tariff plan based on trade deficits.

post above beat me to it, but sounds like it's got some traction at least as to how the %s have been applied.

Pragmatically, having a very simple calculation - a basic ratio, reciprocal tariff is half of that, with a minimum of 10% on both - is not such a bad idea as everyone knows where they stand you avoid endless internal meetings trying to agree countless individual variations.

But you do need to be transparent that that’s what you’ve done and not pretend it’s something super clever and complex.

But then because of this method, some countries are quoted as applying 10% tariffs when in fact they charge more.

Also it ignores services imports/exports. Christ what a car crash. Hope it burns every MAGA fan and everyone too lazy to vote against him or didn't vote because of Harris on 'Gaza'.

To be fair to Beanster Novo are spending money like they're printing it themselves (which they kind of are), and are buying up manufacturing capacity and building factories globally to meet demand. It is possible they make things in the Netherlands.

As a separate point Novo is now such a large part of GDP that the treasury have started working on two sets of numbers: one with and one without Novo to avoid a shock if/when the revenues start dropping off.

The company is valued at about 80% of Denmark's GDP and annual sales last year was about 15-20% of GDP.

But it'll be blamed on everyone other than Trump

Even by the MAGAs themselves

They're so invested in this, they won't allow themselves to admit they're wrong/been had

I read an article a few months ago on how Novo/Ozempic are skewering the Danish economy. Quite fascinating, as you've highlighted above!

I think Novo single-handedly propped up Denmark in 2023. If not for weight loss drug sales Denmark would have been in recession.

So apply the tariffs anyway, they make no difference, but you avoid the negative optics.

That would require a modicum of forethought.
