OV9

The other day i came out of the house at 9:30 on a sunday morning to find my wife’s car (parked on the road because we had my old man over the day before) all unlocked with the boot wide open.



Presumably it had been like that all night (and it’s a fairly busy road)! I can only assume she came in and leant in the keyfob or something, it’s not the first time it’s been left that way (usually reversed on the driveway though!)

Saw the X5 do this, it was moisture ingress in the boot release switch. Also surely a security flaw that a switch can somehow open a locked boot.

I once leant on my key and opened all the windows about 3 inches and it hammered down overnight. Car was getting traded in the next day……

I now disable global open wherever possible

The Jimny failed its MOT today. Mechanically all good but the tester asked me if it had spent a lot of time in Scotland. The underside is a bit crusty and there is an actual hole in the boot floor. Looking at the underside myself it doesn’t look like it’s been parked in the sea or anything, so I am probably going to get a quote for refurbing it - I was planning to sell but confronted with the news that it may not be economically viable to save it, I felt really sad. Realistically if someone offered me a grand for it as it is, I’d take that - it removes the hassle of getting it fixed and it would be worth way more than that in parts.

Any midlanders know a decent welder who charges very little per hour? Flewy would have been my first port of call but I think he is in India most of the time now.

(Based on his insta posts) He’s back as of the end of last week.

Put it on eBay, £1 auction with the reserve at £1000. All the others on there going for more look absolutely terrible so it may do well.

EBay might be a good idea. I’ll drop Flewy a line too, though I don’t know if he kept his unit, tools etc.

I guess it depends how much you want to keep it and how far you want to go with the work. A simple cut out, patch and seal may only take an hour or two and last years, but usually if one spot has gone there’s more not too far away.

Surely even if selling you’d get way more for it with a fresh mot than without so spending £250 or whatever would be worthwhile?

If you were planning on keeping it longer, then sure, further stripping back, cleaning up, coating / painting etc can soon run into the thousands.

It’s more than the boot floor hole Harry. I’ve been in touch with Flewy and will send him some photos to see what he reckons, though there is no substitute for poking around I the flesh. If it looks feasible I’ll take it to him.

I was pondering messaging Dave as well - for similar reasons. The E91 is starting to look a bit crusty underneath - when I had the side skirt off a couple of weeks ago to replace the wing, I peaked under the undertrays. Eesh.

With these opportunities for him to get covered in rusty crud from underneath cars, I suspect he'll be shutting up shop completely before long

Zoe is back home, and my wallet is £912 lighter. For that I have a second-hand compressor, no leaks that he can find, and cold AC. I'm taking it back in a couple of weeks for him to check the levels. It passed a vacuum test, but just to be safe he's checking it again. There is a possibility that the leak is in the internal battery cooling loop, and if that's the case I think it will be Renault's problem as they own the battery.

We have the Corolla in the shop at Toyota currently after a warning message popped up on the screen 'Caution brake power low, pull over' complete with an alarm. This had happened once before a while back and it went in and they reset the fault code. This time, I took it out in a quiet space and did some emergency stops etc. to confirm from a braking point of view nothing feels wrong with it. The error had been coming and going rather than constant and I did manage to trigger it during one emergency stop where the ABS kicked in, and once again when creeping forward to park it in our garage where we use the parking sensors to get close enough to what's in front the sensor triggers a 'STOP!' warning. I'd guessed a squiffy ABS sensor or something like that.

Currently 9 days in the dealer now, last I heard was Thursday last week saying they could see many error codes but not reproduce why they were happening. They were in contact with Toyota Head Office and their technical department on what to do with it as it wasn't something they'd ever seen before. A little disconcerting given they're the biggest dealer in the country and Toyota is by a healthy margin the biggest selling brand in NZ. They also haven't actually told me what they think is wrong with it.

A little panic set in over the weekend when I cottoned in the car is close to dropping out of its three year warranty and maybe there's a bill looming for 9 days and counting... I can't see that actually being the case but no news is bad news at the moment.

Do Toyota not do the thing where if it’s serviced with a main dealer they’ll keep the warranty rolling over there? Also if you’ve presented a fault before the warranty has expired then it’s covered even if the repair takes longer surely?
