That was... Odd, to say the least. Remake of the 1989 War of the Roses, this time featuring Olivia Colman and Benelux Snozzcumber.
I don't know what it tried for, apart from remaking another film, but it didn't carry much with it, and came across as very shallow. Pegged as a "dark comedy", but mostly it was just swearing and weirdness, rather than funny. Best bit was the very end where it, *just*, managed to tie it together.
4/10 stunning seaviews.

Yeah, I enjoyed this yesterday evening. Surprisingly grim and gory in places (I didn't know Sam Raimi directed so that explains it) but well made and well acted and a great ending

Milly Alcock is good, but otherwise, it's a 5/10 movie at best. Incredibly odd meandering plot, pointless baddy, no idea why Mamoa is there, the girl who plays Ruthye really struggles with her lines, and it all plays out exactly as you'd expect.
Definitely one to wait until it hits streaming platform....which given how empty our cinema was, and the sales have been, I guess everyone else thought the same.

Kids saw Supergirl and we're scathing.
Unexpected delight was The Sheep Detectives which had an excellent cast and voice cast. Talking sheep have no right to punch with that level of emotional weight. Memorable.
Over your dead body all over the place and too long. Once it commited to gore comedy in the final act it was okish but then the feel-good coda spoiled even that. I'm not sure if the rape scene was meant to be being played for laughs but just... No.
In Bruges after literally billions of recommendations I sat down with this. Not my regular thing but it was ok.

Same - just got back.
Just lacked any flair for me. Take out Blunt and Firth and I'd have said it was a budget indy film....I'd have certainly not said it was written/directed by Spielberg and scored by John Williams!
Felt too long, chunks of it made no sense and occasionally absurd (him repeatedly escaping swathes of soldiers with ease, getting a tire shot out and magically healed, riding a car being dragged by a train), some characters motivations and actions felt at odds at points (Firth's especially, and he felt miscast IMO).
Big miss for me.
(Unless you like Alfa Romeo's of course plenty of full-frame Giulia shots!)
About halfway through I was thinking "why tf are the clarinets mooning away in the scene" and it struck me that despite alllllllllll the stupid so very very very much stupid, Spielberg still wants to make Saturday matinee adventures. It's ET2 the whataapphomebing and I forgive the stupid.

Two top drawer recommendations if you like a bit of horror... Hokum & Possession are both superb, both in very different ways.

The Odyssey well cast, well acted, well filmed, quite enjoyable.
I'll have to go read the book
One or two dodgy special effects that were minor nitpicks.
But for Anne Hathaway I forgive all.

Oh, also watched The Furious. If you enjoy some OTT MA movies like The Raid, it's right up your street. 8/10.

I'll probably check out that Resi Evil movie. Be interesting to see how someone who's not treating it as fun schlock but as more straight horror gets on.
Kinda apt given some of the games are more schlocky fun with horror (RE4, 6, arguably the most recent one), or straight horror with a bit of schlock in them (RE7 is a great example)
It's definitely a property that lets you be flexible.

That seems to be a common gripe about those who read the book first. I did it the other way round and am really annoying the book but can now see why they made some of the choices they did to make it appeal to as wide an audience as possible.
I really enjoyed The Odyssey too, was engrossed from the off and it didn't feel like a nearly 3 hour movie. I saw a few posts yesterday explaining how much practical stuff was involved in some of the effects sequences, very cool.

I felt very much the same about The Shining - despite Kubrick’s film being correctly recognised as a masterpiece.

Yeah its a common book/movie complaint. 2 hours is always going to be a squeeze for any books that have any real depth.

I don't think the length is the issue. The issue is that the movie has to compete with your imagination - the best CGI in the world!
The only thing I've ever been impressed with (having read the book first) was Slow Horses.
