Sunday. Figured I should check the brakes on the Merc.

A bit crusty on the outside:

So being a good son, I immediately ordered new discs & pads from ECP to collect this morning and fitted them at lunchtime / after work:

This passed an MOT in January :o with just a (strong) advisory. My parents live in a village and the local garage is "generous" and "understanding" on MOTs for trusted customers, and with some of the older cars that's OK because, well, they're old cars. But this is not an old car and those brakes were potentially lethal

But I'm also annoyed with my Dad, because looking at the MOT history, these have been an advisory, with increasingly strong wording, every year since 2020.

That's fucking shocking. I'd probably report them if it were me.

Your missus is a keeper Steve, if i told my missus that we were going to do a long journey in a new car and she had to check the OBD reader every 10 minutes because it might break down, she would probably tell me to fuck off! Especially when you probably have 5 other cars that would do the job fine! 😂

She also wasn't too keen on doing a long journey in an unfamiliar car where I'd said "bloody hell there's something wrong with these brakes !" about 20 yards after setting off

Well, sounds like an adventure! Better mpg on the way back? Hope so!

Think I averaged 19mpg in my pre LCI F10 M5 never really saw any better than 28/29, (14 in F430, 23 in M4, 26 in X5M50d and 23 in M3T over first 5000miles).. like your upside down profile pic, reminds me the X5 used to say POS when viewed from the inside 😁
Cheers,

Ian

That's quite the tale! To state the obvious like everyone else, the brakes are  :?

That's handy to know, ta. Averages are a bit meaningless as they - obviously - depend very much on a person's "average" day. But "best" is going to be 60-70mph motorway and that's more repeatable between owners.

I'm still aiming for 30mpg even if I have to hypermile it.

If we’re talking whole tank averages, i could get to 34mpg hypermiling my M2 (thought the tank was tiny), but it averaged 26.5mpg over 30k daily miles..

Like Ian, I never got over 29 on my ex-business partner's M5 when we used to swap cars. 25/26 on a typical run to Cornwall that my XFR did 22 on.

I didn't realise these were £13k now - At the time his was almost new (3 year PCP) and I was running my XFR with a remap and exhaust. The M5 felt to normal and definitely not worth 3x my XFR at that point, but at less than the equivalent XFR now I can see the appeal. So much car and performance for the money.

Ive recently done braked on my FIL'S E Class coupe. Initially he just wanted pads done. However - they looked very much in that condition with wavey lines on the discs. Not as bad as those on the rear however but I refused to just do pads as they were in such a poor condition. The discs wouldn't come off the hub due to the corrosion on the back stopping it sliding off. Had to hammer them off.
