Did the Morgan tour today. Some very lovely machinery. But for me the steering wheel is even worse than the shifter. Truly gopping and with the Morgan wings on the centre boss it looks like it's been lifted from a MINI

I can't believe they can't get them retrimmed at least for customers, given the fairly extensive degree of customisation possible in upholstery and paint.

Er, with two inches of usable wheel travel, that thing won't survive a speed hump in a car park.

That's a Hilux Champ rather than a fullfat Hilux. It's more of light commercial for tradesmen than an offroader/insurgent. You want an LC for that:

Peter is correct. This is what the champ looks like on it’s actual wheels. I like it tbh, it’s cheap and functional.

Yeah, I think it looks great at a quick glance, before you realise the scale of it and details like the wheels over filling the arches.

While I laughed at the way the bodywork will puncture the tyres on the first one, at first glance that photo looks like a pisstake not the real thing.

It’s not meant to be an off road truck.

It’s apparently about £10k for a chassis cab where it’s available. Perfect rural work truck.

I'm going to get pelters for this and I was as skeptical as anyone given I work in technology, but the current iteration of this on drive with the climate controls on screen rather than buttons is much easier to use, adjust etc.

Its as much as I'd want them to take away from physical controls though....

Looks/sounds impressive (although claiming shifts at close to the speed of light is a bit naff , and changing down from 7th to 2nd (for example) is going to require a significant increase in rpm - which certainly won't happen at light-speed ).

For a race car this could be really good. For a road car I still want manuel, so it's not tickling me massively - although I accept there are undoubtedly some strong technical pluses in terms of gear changes under load (accelerating or slowing) when you're mid-corner.

The gear selector was talked about on Ineos sites and it’s a cost issue. The gear selector is classed as a safety critical system so to change it costs millions in testing and development.

Other manufacturers are already doing that with selectors and new product testing so isn’t an issue.

7th gear to 6th, to 5th, to 4th, for example. If the driver is in
7th gear and wants 4th for maximum power, the DCT
cannot pre-select 4th gear directly. The driver has to pass
through 6th and 5th gears, wasting time and power.

Is that strictly true ? I thought a DCT was basically two gearboxes - one for odd numbered gears, one for even, and the dual clutches flick between the two. So in theory you could be in 7th with 4th preselected ? The “cannot” is down to the programming, it’s not a fundamental limitation.

No expert, but I can't think of a technical reason that would prevent this.

Although you are restricted to swapping between the two shafts, so you could in theory shift from 6th to 5th, 6th to 3rd, or 6th to 1st, but not 6th to 4th, or 6th to 2nd (as these must be ratios on the same shaft).

Yes. So their example would have been better if it was 7th -> 3rd. That’s definitely a difficult shift for the DCT.

Actually, I wonder how that would work. Would it pop it into neutral to do the shift or does it somehow need to engage the other shaft, and thus forced to go via either 6th or 4th. Hmm. If you flicked the paddle repeatedly very quickly you’d hope the first shift is to 6th, by default, and by the time that’s happened it knows you’ve asked for 3rd and can go straight there from 6th.

Every so often I get an urge and start looking at old Corvettes. Why the fuck is almost everything which is imported here an automatic. I can't think of anything worse than a 4 speed auto in a car like that

Because in the US, manual boxes are reserved for serious, hardcore drivers and they treat it like a specialist skill.

I'm not even joking, I'm in a discord with US car people and it's always fun hearing them talk about manual boxes like knowing how to drive them is something special, and to point out that my seventy five year old granny had a manual....
