Pulled the engine out of the old compact, because the weather was too crap to be able to work on mine at ours and because I had a sneaking suspicion from when I changed the clutch 4 years ago that it had a single mass flywheel.

Also the decent Sachs clutch I put in has probably only done a couple of thousand miles.

A bit of old rope slung around the no 3 runner on the intake manifold balanced the engine and gearbox combination surprisingly well



And I was right


I don't think it will be much lighter than the dual mass, but every little helps, and I've saved £100 odd for a clutch like a true cheapskate

They can, but the recommendations are to keep them rearwards facing for much longer than that. We're about to switch the eldest to forward facing and he's five. All the research I've read says that they're pretty much always safest in a crash when facing backwards until they're four years old (strength of the neck compared to the weight of the head in a sudden impact situation).

yeah, he’s coming up on 13 months now so not that long.

yep, that’s the thing - we have the latest (bloody expensive) I-size seats in both cars to not have to compromise on anything (heaven forbid we buy anything other than the absolute best!) - so he’ll be rearward facing for as long as possible.

I remember being one of five kids in the back seat of a Skoda 105 (we often got a lift home with friends). It was different then!

As for the car seats we've got nearly a grand's worth - if you've not checked your insurance cover, it is worth doing. We changed provider last time because previous company didn't even cover the value of one seat as a whole, but new provider covers like for like.

I remember being put in the back of my mates dad's SAAB 900, we thought it was great as you could sit flat and still have a great view out of the back.

I spent plenty of journeys in the boot of the car as a kid. If it was someone’s birthday party (roller skating or something equally 80s) it was pretty normal to cart like 12 kids and a couple of adults in two cars!

The rear facing seat wouldn't fit in the E46 and you needed to buy an extended belt and recoding for something daft like £400+

I sold it and bought a new Mondeo which I owned for 10 months whilst my youngest was in a rear facing seat. I could feel my balls shrinking week by week

I used to regularly stick mates in the back of my escort works van.

Ours got stuck in a forward facing at 15mo when we got a cheap car seat to take abroad. I'll hand myself in at the police station 1st thing tomorrow...

yes I wasn’t fucking around with rear facing for any longer than I needed to plus mini GG hated not seeing where he was going and would scream like billy-o... which probably makes you more likely to have an accident in the first place! Personally I’m amazed car insurance doesn’t require you to stipulate if you have a toddler in the back screaming loud enough to make your ears bleed!

Anyway, my other justification is that it’s a 911 after all - the likelihood of facing front on during an incident is probably much lower than rear first!

Mine regularly get thrown in the back of a shonky old soft-top land rover without so much as a lap belt. Weird thing is, they're fine with that but put them in the car and they start panicking if I pull away before they've got heir belts on.
