Netflix “Titan” - oceangate.

Doesn’t paint Stockton Rush in a particularly good light. Based on this it’s difficult to see him as anything other than a wealthy risk-taker desperate to make this a commercially viable business in a field that required a very measured and test-result-driven approach. Scary biscuits.

Respectfully, the facts and reality don't paint Stockton in a particularly good light. There's no way a Netflix docu would turn that around. The guy was a moron. The only shame is that he took 3 innocent people with him when he got squished.

Yeah, that's fair, but this documentary (and I was careful with my words as - like all documentaries - it's obviously been edited to paint a narrative) contains so many "WTAF?" elements that I wasn't previously aware of.

Stockton loves the camera so there's wads of footage of the testing (on 1/4 scale models tested to failure - which occurs at a far lower level than desired/required, and on test dives (including the original CF titan hull, which.....developed a huge crack)) and how he reacts. The accoustic sensors that were fitted to pick up the fibres in the hull snapping (or possibly internal delamination?) - as it's an absolutely regular "characteristic" of each dive etc etc These sensors were presented as a (highly questionable) "safety indicator". (edit as I just remembered - Rush referred to these as "seasoning" of the CF hull structure as it went through pressure cycles ) Several ex-employees giving their accounts etc etc.

Mr Rush comes across as a man desperate to prove that he'd always have been a hugely successful and entrepreneurial/innovative businessman - even if he (and his wife) hadn't (both) inherited enormous family wealth.

Worth a watch.

It has probably already been watched/mentioned but Scott Manley did a very good analysis of the accident/insane disregard of engineering.

Definitely worth a watch, but what a colossal bellend that guy was. The constant stream of ignoring advice from leaders of each team, who all go on to quit. It was only going to end one way.

Ignoring the acoustic sensor data though. WTAF.

Two strong movie recommendations, both very different, but both are on my favourite films of the year and there's going to have to be some amazing stuff released to know them out of that.

Dear lord that was dire. A cast full of big names that clearly decided that Apple's deep pockets could make up for a script that must have been written by a teenage incel living out their fanfic dreams.

A guy so wedded to his own sense of genius and infallibility that (without engineering knowledge) he defined the engineering solution for things like FSD and Starship...

F1: The Movie.

Went to see this last night. If you suspend everything you "know" about F1 and enjoy it for the entertainment, it's a solid 8/10. Incredibly well done from a visual point of view. If you're the type to pick holes in the realism of things, forget it lol.

The mrs asked if I wanted to go and see it. I said not really. Would probably end up just thinking everything was cheesy Hollywood bullshit

F1 has been getting some very good reviews albeit like @tim says, it's definitely not a documentary. I can't wait to see it on the biggest screen possible.

I went to see 28 Years Later at the weekend which was pretty great. Loved the soundtrack by Young Fathers too. But... every review I've seen mentions the ending of the movie in a "we can't talk about it but WTF". This made me genuinely wonder what on earth they had done, maybe a returning character or something to setup the next one.

When it happened, it was a properly WTAF moment and despite everything I've since read about how its being interpreted, I think it was so out place and people are now trying to convince themselves its some great, edgy artistic decision.

I feel similarly, hence I also watched Kermode’s summary. If you are likely to go see it - you might want to ignore this.

Note : Kermode and Mayo are definitely NCGs.

Watching Deep Cover after Mobland is a bit trippy. Mostly unserious gangstery spoof. Silly but doesn't overstay its welcome. Orlando Bloom clearly loved chewing on the cheesey lines.

The first one had a bit of a unique element to it but now that's known, this second one is just a run of the mill action film and not a very good one at that. (this happens a lot with sequels - Jack Reacher and The Dry sequels are recent examples)

I liked it. But found it pretty confusing. Definitely needs a rewatch knowing what I know at the end...

Saw the F1 film, didn’t want to go at the weekend as I thought it would be packed and 100 people rustling popcorn bags is my idea of psychological torture. There were only 12 other people today!
It’s a solid 7/10 - naturally I thought the off track story was much stronger but the on track stuff makes up for it with the great camerawork. It gets better as it goes along and you get further into the parallel universe.
I found Brundle’s commentary voice really fucking odd and off putting though - it’s sounded synthesised and AI.
One other thing - these super expensive IMAX cameras - can’t they film in more than 24 fps? Some of the fast camera pans are just a juddery nauseating mess.

It really needs a prequel based on Sonny in the 80’s and 90’s racing Senna and Schumacher because as it is the character is still a bit of a mystery and that timeline gives them more freedom.
