It's OE shocks on there at the moment - what I meant was that if a shock on each axle was wobbly, I could justify throwing a whole set of B6s and new (OE) springs on it.

Alas, I just need to drive the car more and see if it gets worse. If it does, then I'll probably throw a pair of B4s on the back for now.

I still think there's something up with, say, top mounts etc as it does clunk a bit over rough surfaces etc, but whatever it is, it's nothing obvious.

I've suggested that when I get them to do the brakes (Which I'll sort in the next few weeks cos I don't want watery brake fluid fucking up the ABS stuff) they could use the car as a shop slag for the day to see if they can work out where the noise is.

If it helps at all, B6 / B8 (shorter version of the B6) are a great choice. I have B8 on the 996 and I like them a lot.

10,000 more miles I assume, rather than clocked  I know that's over 8 years but when you have two other Land Rovers that's not a bad amount of usage.
Yes - edited. The other two have only done about 200 miles combined over that period though!

Yeah I'm a bit averse to lowering it given it's rollin' on 19s and the ride is....sporting enough as it is ;) Also as it stands I have zero problems with speed bumps etc. I'll fiddle with tyre pressures a bit to see if that helps with the jigglyness somewhat, but otherwise, it really doesn't need to be firmer or lower!

Someone had problems with speed bumps in the past though, the front nose undertray has a couple of fastenings missing and some love marks on it  I'll get that fastened back up when the brake fluid is done.

My 3.0 Z4 sat a bit lower than my Z4M (both on standard suspension and similar mileage). The M never had an issue on any speed bumps, especially with the different front bumper design, but I did catch the 3.0 occasionally.

The 987 isn't that low but I just had the front under tray fixed back on as it clearly got a bash recently. Only noticed at 85+ when the flapping was extremely loud 😁.

Also had drivers side window locked at as clunked, lambda sensor tightened and heat shield taken off to rid it of rattling.

A not so wallet damaging 50 quid 🤠

Shorter dampers won’t lower a car (well, unless they’re like 200mm shorter so even at full droop they don’t let the wheel drop as far as normal ride height…)

But will mean they’re less likely to bottom out and thump through the mounts on hard compression.

I mostly just don't want to have to overthink speed bumps. It's not lacking in stiffness or directional stability or whatever else fannies in mags bang on about, so there's no need really.

I'd expect a fresh set of B4s or B6s would be a good thing to do anyway just in terms of having new shocks on it, not sure of the age of the existing ones.

But it's a job for another day, ultimately.

I do need to sort out the reversing sensors though, keep forgetting to hook the scantool up to it, must do that tonight.

The role of Clio 182 as main family car when a dog isn’t in tow is going well.

Did Portsmouth and back plus some driving around.

392 miles and brim to brim was 40.3 litres. 44mpg 😎

I did stick to 65mph on the way there and 75 on the way back though, driving around Portsmouth etc. Still very pleased and will start tinkering with it when the new wheels and tyres go on next month.

In the latest round of high performance race upgrades to my Ateca I had the aircon re-gassed today, getting down to a frosty 8.9°C.

Guy in an estate car with number plate which was something like A112 CON popped around and did it all at the kerbside in 30 mins and for £7.95 less than going to KwikFit.

I will be able to enjoy the best-in-class handling in tomorrow’s heat without breaking a sweat.

I'm finally getting around to investigating the slight rattle/clunk from the 360's suspension, and starting with the front - the offside drop link is totally fcked  That would explain it. I think there's a tiny bit of play in the top & bottom shock bushes too. I'll do those & the ARB bushes as well. Wishbones seem OK.

Far more worrying is a damp steering rack. No drop in the level in the reservoir so it's not a chronic leak. I'll clean it up & keep an eye on it. A rebuild from a recommended specialist is £600:

Which seemed a bit strong until I checked the price of a brand new one from Ferrari.... errr..... £12,244.99+VAT = £14,693.99

Well on the good side - the 911 passed its MOT.

On the bad side - it was only because the tester did me a favour. Bugger - this is the same side that was new after a puncture 12 months ago… I drove the same road last weekend…

Think I need to shell out and replace all 4 for Michelins.

Oh - it’s also done 1818 miles in the last 12 months - not getting used enough!

Also - if anyone wants a set of straight 997 wheels (though in need of a refurb:

The Bad Thing:

That’s quite possibly the original 25 year / 80k mile one. Can’t really complain.

I removed the shocks - very easy. Top bush is what seems to be called a “flambloc”. It’s a bush & mounting bracket combined:

With them off the car they seemed OK just slightly distorted. The lower bushes are actually ball joints. Felt a tiny bit loose. All four removed, replacements ordered.

I guess I should be planning on doing the same on the rears soon.

About 6 years late but I finally changed all the belts on the Mito and did absolutely everything serviceable
Image
The actual cambelt looked almost brand new, however the tensioner was barely tensioned. I don’t know if it was just fitted incorrectly or if it very gradually lost tension :? So perhaps it wasn’t too much of a waste of time.

Speaking of lowering cars above I took my dog to the beach this morning. Come off the main road onto a very bumpy gravel carpark for context. I’m walking the dog and hear a loud crunch. A lowered 3 series absolutely destroyed its bumper. It split right down the middle through the kidney grills. The lad was distraught when I was returning and his female companion looked less than impressed!

Superb update:
- Rear wiper not working & DAB signal crap. Pulled rear cover off to find corrosion all around wiper motor where I suspect the washer has got blocked and water has leaked internally.

I've ordered a new one for £35 (non OEM) and also on a punt a new ariel booster (OEM) which happens to reside very close to.

For daily duties it's perfect but I do fancy something a bit more interesting. Prices of 340i's are mental, 330i 4 pot banger doesn't have the same appeal but much more reasonably priced and is still sub 6 to 60. New VRS looks good but I doubt it would be as good a steer as the Beemer.

Managed to do ~2400 miles in nine days in the Galaxy. Forest of Dean and back, then Copenhagen and back. That takes it to just shy of 80k miles added in our ownership.

Didn't miss a beat, carried all the camping stuff for the first trip, then "just" a half load of suitcases, bedding and the like.

To no great surprise, pushing on on the autobahn uses a lot of fuel. Kept it at 140-150 kph, with the odd overtake nudging past 160. Car isn't that happy above 150, definitely at the point where the engine is being stretched. But apart from that it ate up the miles in reasonable comfort. It'll be interesting to see how it feels after the planned front-end suspension refresh (back already done).
