So, good driving position and good engine. Is that the summary? WTF has BMW been drinking over the last few years?
They painted it black because they know that’s what owners will do. Like putting M stripes on the seats and doors. Odd that they haven’t put M stripes on the grille slats.Rich B wrote: Mon Aug 14, 2023 9:15 pm fairly big improvement to the front by painting the middle lower section body coloured.
Makes you wonder why they purposely painted it black? Still not great though.
Ms definitely do attract their fair share of chav owners.Jobbo wrote: Tue Aug 15, 2023 6:28 amThey painted it black because they know that’s what owners will do. it is allowed!!
Although I’m an admitted BMW fanboy (well, fan-middle-aged-man), I too like all recent M cars. People seem to complain all cars look alike and then slate any manufacturer that does something different.

Having actually looked at the archive when I had my free trial, and having enjoyed the Steve Cropley/Matt Prior podcast over the last year I decided to subscribe to Autocar again. Digital only because I no longer want to accumulate more physical car magazines. It has been some years since I read the mag itself rather than just the website but I think it represents good value and I would quite like to support a mag which has been going for so long, which I've bought for over 40 years and which actually seems to produce content I go back to.IanF wrote: Mon Aug 14, 2023 10:06 am I meant to say, Autocar recently launched a digital archive of all its previous issues, you need a sub but they do occasionally do free trials.. https://www.themagazineshop.com/aca23paa/aca/
I've checked the Autocar road test of the E39 M5 now - 1756kg. They described it as 'hefty'Jobbo wrote: Mon Aug 14, 2023 9:44 amIt's about the same weight as the E39 and E60 M5 in reality too. The E39 seems to be quoted as 1795kg in some places now and I can't easily get to the Autocar 20 Jan 1999 issue with the full road test to check what they weighed it at, but from memory 1795kg was the weight of my E39 540i Touring with auto gearbox; the M5 was a bit lighter. E60 M5 was apparently 1730-1750kg.Marv wrote: Sun Aug 13, 2023 9:42 pm I think that new M2 is heavier than the 3.8 litre E34 M5 my mate used to own.
Does this mean the new M2 is 'big boned'?Jobbo wrote: Thu Aug 24, 2023 9:32 am I've checked the Autocar road test of the E39 M5 now - 1756kg. They described it as 'hefty'![]()
