I keep being tempted by Mannol but read some dodgy things about it? The oil not meeting spec and the whole thing being a money laundering front :?

Oh ?

I've been using it (in appropriate grades, obvs) for years on all my cars. Never had any problem with it.

Yeah I've never had an issue with Mannol, used it for years in my (tuned) T5, the 307, 308, 3008 (both the latter with the dodgy Prince Engine), and it's always been spot on.

I even did the Volvo gearbox three times with their equivalent oil, which everyone said would cause the world to end, and it was spot on.

Last few weeks I've been bumbling around in the old Navara we sent up to the croft. It's funny how quickly you lapse into village driving style in it and I've latterly just had the dogs on the back seat as the boot needs a liner of some sort. I'm sure I look quite, quite made with three or four dogs sitting on the back seat with the windows open.

Image

I got the Dakar back last night and had a fantastic drive back up to the Highlands in it. And while I didn't go for any full-on rally liveries or Shell stickers, I did get one subtle change done as I thought the white needed broken up a bit.

If anyone ever needs any detailing, ceramic coating or PPF done, Autobath Detailing at Wallyford are absolutely amazing. They're worth following on Instagram as they get some really interesting cars in to do.

I'd also forgotten how blindingly white the car is when clean as its not been clean for about 3 months.

Your images weren't showing for me - I tried cut and pasting the urls and got a security message (which I ignored) but if that's your site, Mike, you might need to check something.

Anyway, I assume it's the door decals which you added; normally I'd not go for them but they really suit your white Dakar. Were the mudflaps on it before? Looks utterly gorgeous anyway.

Nor me - when viewing the image url directly I get a "This connection is not private - this website may be impersonating "nullcopy.com" to steal your financial information"

Does it sit for long periods, like weeks unused?

My 996 was noisy on start up if left for a bit. I also started using 10-40 rather than 0-40 which helped smoking on start up and the noise.

I think it's a case of TADTS.

The issue is the SSL cert has run out, just use LetsEncrypt, and never think about it again.

Its only used sparingly but equally doesn't sit for weeks. It doesn't really vary based on usage anyway - it is a distinct rattle that occurs for the first few seconds until, seemingly, oil pressure has built up whereupon it disappears. Likely chain tensioners I expect but frustrating it is not now doing it so the techs can analyse it.

Yeah, that's exactly what's happened. Hosting company has been bought over by 123 and nothing works. Bollocks.

Sorted.

I'd be interested in other experiences as there have been plenty of flat 6 owners on here but that doesn't sound unlike mine if if wasn't used everyday.

I assume Porsche still use really thin oil (0-40 or 0-50) by default which can run out of lifters/tensioners etc when left cold for periods!

Yes they use 0W generally but 5W also recommended as an alternative. I used to get plumes of smoke on startup where the oil had seeped past the rings. 5W oil helped but didn't totally fix it. Interestingly the 991 has never done that - not so much as a puff irrespective of how long it had been sat.

I think the difference here is that whilst 911s rattle and more so when not used, its not usually a binary rattle which then disappears entirely once up to pressure in my experience. Its also embarrassingly loud and sounds like an old knacker rather than just a bit tappety... kind of the equivalent of a fanbelt squeal on startup

I'd prefer the decal to continue to the rear wheel arch.

i think the opposite! I hate the normal porsche bands and they always look like they belong on a dodgy £5k Boxster.

These look far better and accent the flared arch. Though randomly remind me of the little winglet from the headlights on my Transporter… 🫣

If you could get a huge whip antenna, spare wheel on the roof and some dark bronze alloys with a polished lip that would be great thanks.

Such an awesome useable car.

Dave!

I think you can only get those on factory cars as part of specific packs like the heritage stuff?

@tim - It was a mad couple of months after moving house. TLDR - I needed winter tyres and bought a Dakar.
