No can do until he's 25 according to LV. Even with him being 20 and nearly 3 years NCB.

Aviva are the same as we can't add my 19yr old daughter to my wife's Sportage to take dogs out if we are away.

Try Veygo for temporary cover though as it only works out about £30 for the weekend.
Thanks Carlos, will try that.

Our eldest is 27 with his own car, no claims in the last 5 years (but one SP30 2 years ago). I tried to add him to mrs mik's e-tron insurance this year to give us some more flexibility, but the premium more than doubled (it went up about 125%). So.... we didn't add him :?

The driving other cars clause is usually always restricted to 25 and over. But once you're that age and if it's included in your insurance then you don't need to call up. It's just third party cover which is what I tend to use.

My partner has added her son to her Mini Cooper before for £40 for a weekend.. separate policy. Also, make sure the Dakar is fully fuelled, just in case*

Just did a quotation for a group 1 VW Up for my daughter on her provisional. cheapest Q is £221 annual.

I thought that was maybe the monthly cost then remembered that provisional is cheap, once they pass it rockets? Is that right enough?

*Edited to add - I just aged her by 6 months and claimed a full licence, jumped from £226 for a Fiat 500 in 06U insurance group on her provisional, to just under £1500 with full licence.

I have to be honest, I expected it to be far higher!

Was that with a black box?

It has to specifically included in the policy though, not as standard like it used to be.

We were all paying £1100 and above back in 1999 so I’d say that’s not so bad.

I hear there might be somewhere private and not on the public roads where I can give my boy a shot when he's up to see how it compares to his 1 litre Corsa.

I’d say the difference is worth not tracking them for a year, absolutely hate the idea of trackers. At least you have the option to turn it off on your phone.

ML dropped down to £245 this year which was nice. Now £500 for both everyday cars and when I stop being a Fanny and fox the Defender, it will be about £700 for 3.

Not having expensive stuff does have its benefits.

I’m with Dave in that these are hateful objects. Are they now clever enough that braking & swerving to avoid a hazard doesn’t hit you negatively?

My main problem is that they drive dangerous behaviour. Overtaking a tractor in a 40 limit - safest overtake with the space abvailable might see peak speed hit 45 - I want to be focussed on completing the move safely. With a black box you are laser focussed on avoiding breaching 40 - to the detriment of everything else.

My son came in one night looking really shaken - his mates black box policy meant he couldn’t drive after midnight (I think) and they’d been held up. To get home without insurance impact his mate was running every red light - asking my son to help watch for hazards as he was glued to the speedo to ensure he didn’t go 1mph too fast…..

I nearly accidentally bought an insurance policy which had a black box. I think it was with Admiral last year, but I got to their actual website and noticed they wanted me to install an app which tracked me rather than an actual black box.
I must say I did contemplate risk:reward for 5 seconds about whether the £300 saving is worth me sticking a sim in an old phone and just sticking it in the 30 mph UTV

Yeah, I can't say I am a fan at all, but it is a huge saving. Hopefully just for the first year or so then can ditch it.

In 1994 I was paying £850 tpf&t for a 300 rotbox of a Fiesta! I don't think it is any worse today price wise

Well holy smokes Batman - that is one incredible drop in premium on the 911 (yes the small number is actually the renewal!)

I guess this was my first year insuring the car with them (previous insurer didn’t ’offer to renew’ possibly because of pulling out of the market altogether for this type of car) but I still would have declared that I’d owned the car for 12 months when I originally took out a policy with them so not sure why they think the risk has dropped drastically after 24 months owning it.

Anyway. Will offset the tyre egg that I have to deal with…
