It is lovely and wasn’t massively over what I expected it to cost, but how much does a Fulvia Zagato go for now?

Harry is at risk of having a garage full of perfect cars which have each cost him 6 figures.

Is the 1600 rarer/more valuable? He acknowledges that it's more than it's worth, but why not - if you're not selling and it's exactly what you want, then great!

His is probably one of the best examples around as these were only £10-15k cars a decade ago and any earlier restorations will not have been as thorough. I could imagine a Lancia enthusiast paying £80-90k to own that.

I was quite surprised about how far forward the engine is in that Lancia

It's way in front of the front axle/wheels

Common for longitudinal fwd unless you can magic up something funky with driveshafts through the sump which then gives rideheight issues.

Alfasud is the same, and why they used a boxer, and the lancia a V4, to keep the block length short.

You can see the drive flanges under the brake callipers,



I expect the fulvia is very similar, as is the Subaru Impreza. Basically the same as a beetle / 911 spun 180 degrees and bolted the other end.

Clever. Adds quite a bit of width though, not so good for older cars but fine now they all fill parking spaces

I'm not sure what it does for foot room but iirc a complaint of the A5 was the awkward offset to the right the pedals had (alleviated by getting an auto).

That was the case in my S6 (C5 model) as well so I think it’s just an Audi thing generally.

Interesting; I've never found it an issue in B5 Passats. but then they didn't get the V8* and maybe it's that that makes the difference


* Slightly ot; the V8 fits the Passat (and the A4), and the W12 is said to have a slightly smaller footprint

Compared to the B5 / C5 platform cars, the A5 (and related A4 of that generation - ?B8?) were the ones where Audi made a point of how much they'd moved the powertrain rearwards into the middle of the car so the engine was no longer slung outboard of the front axle. Could that have impacted on position of the rhd pedal box? I didn't find the pedals in my former 2.7t A6 C5 to be particularly offset compared to anything else I drive.

Originally I was with you but it's such an interesting shape (after xxx hours of body work) the red really shows it off.

Very much so. The 1600 was only in the HF (High Fidelity) cars so they would have typically been homologation or competition cars.

Seems to be the usual problems with repro parts rather than any incompetence from the builders though. I'd imagine the first little while after a big resto like that will have a bit of a snagging list to go through.

£87k for the Fulvia rebuild though, admittedly cheaper than I had guessed in my head. No wonder he had to sell some bikes

Poor quality parts, both genuine and aftermarket is the reason I’m becoming more and more disappointed with cars in general.
