I tried one before buying the Bentley. Terrible headroom.

You must be massive. I thought you were referring to the rear seats when you originally said that!

mik - we also need to take a fair amount of "stuff" with us on this occasion.

mito - I'm only 6'4" but I seem to have long everything. In the XJ I viewed, my head wasn't just touching the headlining, it was up into the sunroof recess and nearly touching the glass ! I didn't even bother trying to drive it.

You shall now be known as OdBod.

Don’t the Aston seats fold flat or is that just the Rapide ?

Dave!

It's a boring and predictable choice, but surely, just buying a five-series would be the safest choice? You know it'll be a great stopgap until you get an urge to buy something else.

Or what about a 4-series GT? Very popular fleet cars and good on the motorway too.

You might be thinking of the DB9 - the Vantage is a pure 2-seater. It's not bad but it's not enough for this trip.

928 booked in at the trimmers on the 22nd. Should be done about a month after.

You're not going until August. That Mondeo has £11000 of depreciation left to do. Could you really?

ETA: it does actually look quite appealing though - but I bet it won't when it's sat on your drive doing nothing once you're back

I agree with this.

Although finding an E39 540i wagon might take a bit longer.

An HSE or a Luxury would do nicely. Subject to headrest positioning for you & Robert Wadlow of course.

Here you go, at almost disposal money -

It was actually my demonstrator when new! Comfy seats, reasonable stereo. It's been a while, but I can't remember there being an issue with headroom. The seller has trying to get shot of it for a year, so I think £2k would buy it.

For a road tripping relaxowomb you could get an LS600h for not much more than that Mondeo.

OK, it's an intriguing one, I'll grant you. I'm not sure I'm brave enough to move away from ze Germans though.

Seems a lot of hassle to buy a car for one specific trip (especially when you have loads of cars!!) so I'd say something like a 2015ish M5 or an AMG CLS/C/E of some kind.
