With Kathryn away for a few days, I've been enjoying some movies on the big telly in the hallway. Last night was Dredd. I had forgotten how good it was. Karl Urban is a remarkable chin actor and it took me a while to recognise Lena Headey which bodes well for her now that GOT has finished shooting. The gore was more than I remembered.

I think tonight will be Pacific Rim Uprising.

Watch the The Sarah Connor Chronicles if you haven't already. Lena is great as Sarah, under all the weight of knowing what is coming for her son (and the world). The lady from Garbage is surprisingly good as a scary baddie.

and since this is a movie thread... The World Is Yours - like a French Lock Stock with a nice guy working through a world of bumbling crims.

A Quiet Place - really enjoyable horror(?)/sci-fi dystopian thriller about a family trying to stay alive on an earth which has been invaded by deadly creatures who hunt by sound. Really interesting idea, very well executed and for once the main leads (for the most part) behave very logically and don't need to resort to idiotic actions to forward the plot. Really tense stuff. 4 hearing aids out of 5.

Mission Impossible Fallout - My surprise film of the year so far. Utterly brilliant. By far the best MI yet and one of the most enjoyable big screen experiences I've had in years. Apparently its the longest of the series but the time flew by. Stunning visuals and soundtrack to match - great use of sound in both a creeping dread and impending doom sort of a way.

And one of the most tense ends to a film in ages. Even though I knew exactly what would happen I was tensed up and on the edge of my seat. Can't wait to see it again.

It’s not out yet, but I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Laurel and Hardy biopic with Steve Coogan and John C Reilly.

I loved The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It was a really interesting story, good action and an interesting take on the lore

There’s a new Terminator movie due in 2019. I’m a massive fanboy, so am VERY excited for it. It’s the first films since James Cameron got the rights back to the franchise. Apparently it’ll be a sequel to Terminator 2, and ignore all the other films etc since then. Linda Hamilton is back as Sarah Connor and apparently Arnold has a cameo too

Oww hadn't seen that. I love Mackenzie Davis and saw the left girl in Birds of Passage just last week but that pic looks weird. Like all their heads are the wrong size and Linda's glasses were put there by a "Deal with it" animated gif.

Echoing Mike's thoughts. Just back from a 9pm showing at our local Cinema.

I'll add a couple of points.

Cruise is so brilliant with doing all the stunt work (and helicopter flying) himself that you can completely suspend disbelief at all the effects on the screen. It's just like watching 'reality'. Incredible.

I called a couple of the twists very early, but others managed to catch me out. The M:I franchise has really reached a new high with dangling what you think will happen in front of you, and then throwing that away and doing something completely different.

It's a 9PM showing of a 12A film, which means that yes, you can bring an under 12 into the cinema when accompanied by an adult, and at their discretion. That doesn't mean it's at all suitable for the 3-6 month old baby who was present in the auditorium. That mother is a fucking retard.

Empire have just done one (now two) spoiler special podcasts with Christopher McQuarrie about MI:Fallout which make for fascinating listening about the process, things they cut and everything else about the movie basically. The first one clocks in at just under 3 hours long and its great to hear an a-list director being so candid and open about a movie like that.

Yes, they're all good. The first one is legondary, the second less so. All the others are great. If you want to watch Fallout you need to really watch at least 3 and 5 first.

But why not binge all 5 then see 6 in the cinema?

They’re entertaining enough, I remember one being pretty crap (2nd?) but the recent ones have been quite good (if a bit forgettable).

This one really was a step above, I definitely recommend it.

I watched Darkest Hour at the weekend. Wasn't expecting much, but it blew me away. I reckon you could stich this & Dunkirk together for an amazingly long war epic.

I also watched downsizing. Great idea, but it just ran out of puff quarter of the way through & continued to go down hill. Terrible ending too.

War for the Planet of the Apes

This reboot series has been great throughout and each movie just gets better and better. Utterly gripping storytelling. Woody Harrelson is great as always, but he’s not the best thing in it. Highly recommended.

Avengers Infinity War

It's good, I wasn't expecting it to be bad if I'm honest. If you've watched everything coming up to it and like what they've done then it's a satisfying end to the first arc of the MCU. I wouldn't recommend it for people who haven't seen any of the other Marvel movies though, it pretty much just jumps straight in.

Extinction

Decent invasion movie from Netflix. It's pretty by the numbers most of the way but it has a satisfying twist.

How it Ends

Not recommended, I normally like end of the world stuff but this was just boring.

A Quiet Place

Another end of the world one. Monsters attracted by sound so everyone has to be quiet. It's good, the monster design is ace and the cast is good. Felt like a bit of an ego trip for John Krasinski, he co writes, directs and stars as the heroic main character. That's the worst I could say about it though, it's worth watching.

Death Wish

The Bruce Willis remake. It was Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis with some Eli Roth gore effects, not the worst film ever but not particularly memorable.

The Endless

Decent scifi movie about two brothers who go back to the cult they escaped from as kids to find that there's more to it than they remember. Can't really say much more without giving the plot away but it's worth a watch.

Deadpool 2

I loled

Ant Man & The Wasp - light hearted fun. If you enjoyed Ant Man, GOTG and Ragnarok you will lol at this one too.
