Wrong spellings and words
Re: Wrong spellings and words
I don’t know if it’s a Teesside thing but when someone refers to more than one person it’s “yous”. Always annoys me
On the subject of bought, one of my pet hates is when someone puts something in their trolley and tells you “I’ve bought this”. No you haven’t. Until you’ve paid for it all you have done is put it in your trolley. I guess that comes from when I worked in a supermarket

must be, running into someone in a shop who then wants to talk about the contents of their trolley with you is a pretty niche situation!jamcg wrote: Fri Apr 26, 2019 9:32 pm On the subject of bought, one of my pet hates is when someone puts something in their trolley and tells you “I’ve bought this”. It’s a Scouse thing, too. I quite like it. Yous lot. Works for me as a plural for you.jamcg wrote: Fri Apr 26, 2019 9:32 pm I don’t know if it’s a Teesside thing but when someone refers to more than one person it’s “yous”. Always annoys me

The etymology of "ask" is pretty interesting actually. Chaucer and the first English translations of the bible have "ax" or "axe" rather than "ask" for example.
Re: Wrong spellings and words
On Facebook "I am new to the motor-home seen"
Re: Wrong spellings and words
I’ve seen “cunt be bothered” on FB before
Re: Wrong spellings and words
And someone had a ‘santra pay tan’

Re: Wrong spellings and words
That's quite likeable

Re: Wrong spellings and words
Is that 'St Tropez tan'?!! That's really special!!

It was a few years ago but still makes me laugh. Got to admire her confidence in just spelling something the way she’s always heard it though

Re: Wrong spellings and words
The Irish and Scottish seem unaware of the words "to be" and miss them out altogether. It's very odd.
"That room needs painted".
No, no - it's a brave effort but in fact the English version is "that room needs TO BE painted". Try again.

Re: Wrong spellings and words
Can't say I've ever heard that from the Irish... "That Room needs painting" yes but not "That room needs Painted"
Re: Wrong spellings and words
I was first made aware of it in Russia, working with the most Irish person I've ever met, to the point the translators would have to act as, well, translators.
Re: Wrong spellings and words
He actually WAS from Cork. But this "needs painted" thing is commonplace, I've even seen the Scotchishers on here use it.

JL needs punched....
Looks like you could be right there James.
Do misunderstood phrases fit in this Fred too?
I was standing behind a lady in the newsagent once, who stated to the owner "well that's just power for the course isn't it?"
