It's not the pace. Sure they'll have plenty of pace (although for near identical power figures and a LOT more torque I'd expected them to be quicker than their petrol ancestors), but there's more to a 'sports' car than just the pace. There's also the noise, the agility, the feedback etc etc.

They've just dumped a load of boring sounding extra weight over the S5's nose.

Ah this might be a different interpretation of the brand then - I see the Sx cars as more luxurious and quick rather than sporty, as that's RS-land for me.

I think that must come down to your interpretation of 'sporty' then. I'd consider Sx cars to be sporty, as I would a Golf R, an A35 or an M140. They're all 'sporty'. I'd then consider an RS model, a C63 or an M4 the 'full blown' variant.

And don't forget how quick an S4/5 is nowadays. Faster than your RS4 IIRC from that Carwow video a few weeks ago.

Most cars listed in your post are quicker than my Audi - it's nothing special any more.

The S5 comes in convertible form too doesn’t it? Which makes it really odd if you can only get it with a diesel.

Again - Audi have been diesel convertibles for some time now and the world has continued to spin. Look guys, I'm not a fanboy but I'm sure they know what they're doing here.

Well being on a car forum I tend to forget that the mast majority of people just want a luxurious comfortable relatively fast car and have no interest in how it achieves any of those things - see Tesla basically

I think it's exactly the right move for Audi. The RS models with the most powerful petrol engines and the S models with stonking diesels; previously either the S was in the RS's shadow (e.g. most recent petrol S6 with a detuned version of the RS6 engine) or tread too much on the RS's toes (e.g. the B8 shape S4/RS4).

The other problem I have with this is that Audi are effectively saying 'don't buy an S5 unless you do diesel mileages', which is silly because what if someone buys an S5 and doesn't do many suitable miles?

You're right. It's not like I'm ever gonna be in the market for a new S5 anyway!

I'm gonna go and shake my fist at the clouds.

My mate bought a diesel A5 insisting he needed it for the mileage when we asked him why he didn’t buy a petrol one. He previously had a seat exeo. His brother told me that in a year it had done 800 miles.

Maybe he walked 500 miles first?..

The driver doesn’t seem to reach the top speed in that ‘top speed’ test 😄

:? He reaches 261 (speedo), which should be the genuine 250 they're limited to.

It was still accelerating. I’ve never maxed out a car by backing off.

I saw a diesel RS6, it was an incredibly good fakey but Once running was very obviously diesel.

The shame.

Dave!
