If that was the defining factor, then the 0-60 would be slower and the 60-100 would be quick.

I think it's a combination of what a few people have mentioned

Was reading the Roger Bell review of it in CAR magazine from the mid 80s and he reckoned getting max acceleration sub-100mph was a constant matter of restraint.
Seems to be fair to say it was a sub 1200kg ready to drive as R&T weighed theirs at 1235kg with a 75kg tester ( only one, not 2 like Autocar might )

As Roger Bell tells it, from his test drive, it seemed to be a very delicate balancing act in trying to deploy full surge as the tyres simply bonfired in 1sr and 2nd gea. Seeing as 1st went to 55mph and 2nd to 90mph I can see that having to featherfoot it until you were into 3rd would really handicap a fast 0-100 ( and standing quarter mile ) time. Can imagine you'd need a lot of practise to launch it even close to its potential. However, I reckon the 100-120mph and 120-140mph times would be right 'on it' for the power and weight

I agree with everything Mike said. Whether there is any truth in it or not.

Look at it.

LOOK AT IT! 8-)

Are we sure this figure is actually correct?
Seen it quoted in a few articles. F40 has a 6spd box, whereas the GTO has a 5spd.
No it doesn’t, F40 is a 5 speed too.

Yep, F40 has 20% more power and 335s
I think just more rear rubber on a 288 GTO would get it near 10 seconds. An extra 80bhp for the 288 GTO would maybe close the times up even more

Then build in test track/driver/temp discrepancies etc and and the 2.5 second difference seems explicable
