Hyundai i10s are ace, in manual anyway. Small, 4 doors, sorted (and fun to drive).

The point is she doesn’t drive despite having had a licence for 8 years and doesn’t really like it (hence why she waited so long to pass her test).

I’ve bought, by my count, 4 cars with her in mind (ie automatics) and she’s steadfastly refused to drive any of them regularly.

Now she has to get her arse in gear and drop / pick our son off from school she *might* actually start driving regularly but there is no way I’m spending thousands on something for her to let it rot outside.

In addition, having not driven anything for about 3 years, it make sense to get her something very cheap for her to damage whilst she’s gets back up to scratch (well, as up to scratch as she was before) before I swap it for something that I’d be annoyed about if she’s scrapes it.

That is brilliant.

On a similar note my wife has always paid for her car and motoring costs , every penny.

Anything else I appear to be fair game 😂

Just to nip this line of questioning, let's take it as read that yes, they actually do need a car.

Surely a Yaris then? Small, cheap and reliable. Unlike the petrol a class, which are shit, lots of things break and they are horrific on parts prices hence why there are hardly any left on the road now.

Carl.

It's 20 minutes on a bus each way, traffic dependent and the route tracks the south circular in rush hour so not ideal. You'd go a more straightfoward route in a car and it take 9 minutes.

If you work on the basis that you'd do that journey four times a day then you spend 1hr 20 on a bus versus 36 minutes in a car. Plus you need to build in time waiting at bus stops because funnily enough they don't arrive on demand so the difference will be even greater than that.

Add to that the fact that London buses in rush hour are rammed and if you're travelling with a pram, which she will be, if there is more than one other pram on (or just extremely full), you might have to wait for the next one and that particular bus is one every 15 minutes.

Cheapest Yaris meeting the requirements is £1800 and 200 miles away. Cheapest local one is £2000 so double the 'budget'.

Mk1 Ford Focus.

Very cheap parts and apart from a few drop links and 1 fuel pump, none have had a single failure. I think between ours and my parents we’ve done about 150,000 miles in total now. A 1.4 3 door, a 1.6 LX 5 door and a 1.8 Zetec 5 door.

Also apart from door skins on ours, none have had any structural rust.

Cheap, fun handling and reliable.

Dave!
