New Supra
Re: New Supra
Hoovie made a good point on twitter in that if you were Toyota with an unimpeachable reputation for reliability, why the fuck would you have BMW do the engine. "... a company which hasn't made a reliable engine since 1995"
Re: New Supra
? Do BMW have a reputation for unreliable engines then? I’ve not heard that it experienced it?
Re: New Supra
FTFY as it appears you've forgotten what a Supra is.NotoriousREV wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 10:20 amI don’t hate it as a car, other than it being ugly. I hate it as a Supra. It’s not supposed to be small and light, a Soarer is supposed to be a fast 2+2 coupe based GT.

Re: New Supra
Lots, especially recently.
N47, B47 and N57 diesels. N53, N63 petrols. That's just off the top of my head.

Re: New Supra
Swirl flaps, VANOS, rod bearings on both e46 and e90 M3s, the turbo'd 35i engines had various failure modes didn't they (injectors, turbos, high pressure fuel pump)?
I wouldn't necessarily elevate BMW above many of its peers for unreliability but they're clearly no Toyota.

Re: New Supra
As for the Supra - minging. And disappointing that it's a Z4 underneath

Re: New Supra
It seems very BMW inside - the gearlever, iDrive controller, screen, dash architecture:
Re: New Supra
Agreed. Are Toyota in such bad shape that it required collaboration? Or just simply creative / engineering decision?Swervin_Mervin wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 10:37 am As for the Supra - minging. And disappointing that it's a Z4 underneath
I like the look though, like I like the looks of LFA & NSX.
Would like to see what Gazoo Racing will come up next; hopefully not just a Z4M clone but bespoke with 100+ bhp and 100kg weight loss.
Re: New Supra
And I'm sorry but 335bhp? That's a bit 2009 isn't it?
A 370Z had similar on its release a decade ago.

Re: New Supra
The 370z is 10% heavier though (1600kg v. 1450kg). A more direct comparison might be the old-shape Z4 35is which had... 335bhp and was launched in 2009 as you say. Cripes, that's a decade ago
Re: New Supra
Essentially it pretty much matches the outputs of the m140i when it should be closer to the current M2 engine at 404hp.
Re: New Supra
Yep the BMW will have a M lite model, full M and then a competition and no doubt Toyota will do the same. Will probably be quite handy by the time they get to the final version.
How about not having a sig at all?
Re: New Supra
I would guess that it is still not going to be powerful enough in all likelihood. I can't imagine the hot Supra getting 70+ HP more than the mid range model. If that's the working hypothesis then we would be assuming they've launched the sports car equivalent of a 318i or say a Z4 2.0 first.
ETA - then remember, its £52k starting price for what you're guessing is the base model. I would then presume a Supra GT or Z4M would be knocking on for maybe £80k and that's too much.

Re: New Supra
I don't care about the power or weight or that it's based on a BMW.
I do care that it's properly fugly.
The concept wasn't particularly pretty with its gonzo nose, but at least it had more exotic looking proportions.

Re: New Supra
The concept was nice, the reality different
Re: New Supra
Er... 4-cylinder versions already confirmed: https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-jap ... rmed/39449
And looking at the BMW Z4 range, the M40i which shares the Supra's engine does appear to be the top engine; that's why they've made it an M-version.
Re: New Supra
This is interesting, until now I thought the 335 bhp output was WTLP only as the Americans were rumoured to have 385 bhp but as it is the US press release also has 335 bhp which would be odd if they’re running the expensive power restraining particulate filters unnecessarily. But at least it’s a much more reasonable $49,990 over there.

Does the 'W' in WLTP not mean 'World'?Mito Man wrote: ↑Tue Jan 15, 2019 12:32 pm This is interesting, until now I thought the 335 bhp output was WTLP only as the Americans were rumoured to have 385 bhp but as it is the US press release also has 335 bhp which would be odd if they’re running the expensive power restraining particulate filters unnecessarily.
