My mate getting a Lunchbox for Chrimbo from his kids hasn't helped either, regardless of my previous post!

Out of curiosity, this is the one I was looking at. Feel free to tell me why I need to spend 2-3x as much.

Because life is about wants, not needs, and it's cheaper in the short, medium and long term to just get what you want from the get-go.

Not necessary anymore with modern LiPos. They've revolutionised RC cars IMO. I can remember spending so much time waiting for batteries to charge to get maybe 5 mins driving from each pack if lucky. The new batteries will let you drive for 25mins and charge in hardly any longer. With 2 packs you can drive almost non-stop. You just select a pack with higher power rather than need to add more cells too.

I have to stop myself reliving my youth and buying this on an almost weekly basis.

Aye fair enough mate - all my knowledge is 30 years out of date (a terrifying prospect in itself). They're not giving those Optimas away though, are they!

I loved my old Super Sabre but it did become more of a decoration than something that was used. I think I almost enjoyed building it more than driving it.

The Super Sabre had one horizontal shock shared between the front wheels which made me envy the fully independent setups. I'd drive it up and down my road and had a great trick where I would powerslide it up the drop kerb outside my house, over the crest of the drive and drift it down past the house. It was great until I cocked it up and twatted it off the house and ripped a wheel off. It was never quite the same after that.

I also managed to launch it of the edge of a tree stump and perform a corkscrew before landing on its wheels again. That was a "did that really just happen?" moment.

I suspect that when the kids are a touch older I might get another one.

I bought a pair of Tamiya Super Fighter's for peanuts just before Modelzone went bust in 2009. Building it with my 9yr old daughter took months 😀 but it's still one off the most memorable things I've done with my daughter and really piqued an interest in mechanics and engineering.

The chap selling the '959' shell on the ebay thread also has this listed;

I know I've got various Tamiya bits lurking in cupboards somewhere, no idea what I've got left (apart from some of it is in an original Rough Rider box and some in an original Hornet or Boomerang box) or if any of it's usable now. Hmm, might have something in the loft as well.

Slightly o/t, when nosing about on google maps I've found a couple of rc tracks, a pleasant surprise 8-)

^^ That is so cool.

I still have my 2 cars in the garage - Shame that Tamiya hasn't re-released either TBH. I've a Madcap and a Mud Blaster. The later with a custom built wheelie bar I added. I made it out of aluminium and scalextric wheels. It's awesome! Would love to get them going again....

I had a Tamiya Falcon as a kid. It was THE FASTEST THING IN THE WORLD.

I sort of fancy buying and building (the Falcon was bought off a mate so already built) another one but haven’t really got anywhere to use it.

Fellas, it's 10 mins of your life you won't get back but William has made his first proper video and he'd really appreciate if you chucked him a few likes.

I'm very proud of him, two 5 minute pieces to camera edited together without a script was pretty good going for a 10 year old I reckon. We'll overlook the odd technical inaccuracy for now :)

I need some advice on batteries because I can’t quite wrap my head around it.

These are the battery packs from 2 cars that we have. The larger one is a NiMH 3800 from an HPI truck. The smaller one is a 1200mAh pack from a Traxxas truck. Both are dead, and I think my charger killed them.

I know the HPI truck can run a LiPo pack by changing the dip switches, but not sure about the Traxxas.

I need to get new packs and a new charger that won’t destroy the batteries after literally and handful of charges but I’m finding the whole thing hugely confusing and have no idea what to order. The HPI truck always died after about 5 mins so I definitely want more capacity.

Help!

I've got a Neo Scorcher as my bashing buggy (plus a load of retro tamiya re-re's for light running).

I run mine on a brushless 10.5T motor and lipo batteries. It goes like a rocket and lasts ages, can't recommend the switch enough (for comparison a 5000mah lipo will last about 30 mins of running before shutdown and you'll likely be bored before it goes flat). The TT02B needs a metal diff from another buggy to cope with the torque and mine also sports a lot of carbon fibre parts and upgrades (probably doubled the build cost), but it is hardy now and has never broken.
Hobbyking is your friend for electronics, I've found that they really can't be beaten on value. Have fun with it.

I need to actually get my Top Force out for a bit of a run this year in the summer as it hasn't moved since i built it.

My mate has got a lipo Traxxas - it's like a missile but I get the same sense of meh over it as I do with Teslas. I want to hear combustion and see exhaust and that is the end of my participation in the matter.

Have to agree there isn't much like a nitro on full bore.
I moved back to electric as my Nitro's were 1/8th scale Rallycross buggies and were big, loud and fast to the extent you couldn't really run them in public. It mean't everytime I wanted a play I had to make a special trip out with them to a track or designated area (and most want BRCA membership to run because of insurance). Fuck that, they are a toy really, a bit of fun and it take the joy out of it. 1/10th Tamiya electrics are big enough and fast enough to be interesting but still small enough and quiet enough to run them most places with a bit of open ground.
I have a giant school field behind my house that I have access to and I can pick up a buggy and walk out the gate with it. If it breaks I get another and if a need a tool or small part they are in the garage in the spares box. Just makes it fun.
I do have one Truggy that was nitro but I got the lipo conversion kit, you plug in and go now and starting and tuning is forgotten, with the 3.5T motor the speed is bonkers, probably 70mph off road now! That certainly makes up for the noise.

I’m quite looking forward to my little boy being old enough to use an as excuse for me to buy an rc car - my back garden is massive so would be great to do a track!

Carl succinctly describes why my old Traxxas nitro truck is still broken in a box somewhere in my garage from when I smacked it into a tree a full tilt about 10 years ago. Whilst they're fast and fun, they are very antisocial.

We can rip round our garden/drive with these 1/10s without bothering anyone, there's a BMX track 5 mins away and a skate park about 15. Job's a good 'un.
