People who stick to the "always leave enough distance to come to a complete stop in the space available" have clearly never driven on a motorway. Or is it just me who doesn't always find it possible to leave the requisite 96 metres between each and every other car?

Rich - think about this in the reals. Do you really tip-toe around every unsighted corner?

It's not a legal requirement, though. A good idea, yes, but largely irrelevant for the purposes of apportioning blame in an accident.

Reasonable expectation and apportioned responsibility is the key here. Basically, don't try and turn your van and trailer around on an unsighted corner, you thick working class cunt

Looking at the picture that was the first thing that came to mind - who the actual fvck would do a three point turn there, let alone with a trailer on the back of it

Plenty of riding schools round my way seem to make every effort to send out horses two abreast on the roads at rush hour with high hedges. Daft not to expect the worst.

We're basically agreeing here - I'm just saying that although we tailor our speed to conditions, always being able to come to a full and complete stop at any time given any circumstance is not realistic. Maybe it's just me, as frankly I'm something of a maverick. :D

yeah, you’re probably correct - like I said, we all have lapses in concentration or bad assessments.

We didn't quite agree but all points had been made and no further movement was going to happen, and that's OK.

To be fair, you can generally see past the car ahead of you on a motorway.

Agreed but even in that instance you are assuming the other driver is going to continue to act rationally and with some competence, and that his vehicle will remain in good working order.

Or does everyone except me assume that any given car in front of you is just about to throw a rod and lock the wheels, or that the driver is going to have a heart attack?

My overly-laboured point is that we have the right to expect some degree of common sense and predictability from others as we go about our lives, and that encountering a van and trailer doing a 3-point turn on an unsighted corner, and then colliding with it, doesn't necessarily mean a lapse in concentration or a bad assessment by the, erm, collider.

I'll let this one go now - which normally means I'll do nothing of the sort :D

Only a fool breaks the two second rule JL.

Unless the car in front hits a very thick brick wall and stops dead, I’ll be able to break as quick as them!

This, following a car on the motorway doing the same speed as you is an entirely different matter vs going round an unsighted bend at speed where there may be a stationary object.
