And to add some context the F40 remains merely an upgraded GTO with ruined styling that was even seen by the journalists of the time as little more than a cynical marketing excersise cashing in on the emerging hypercar market of the day.
But not having any experience of the car it's a bit difficult to say it's overrated.

So it’s upgraded, and therefore better.
Ruined styling? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but calling it ruined is utterly ridiculous.

I believe it was MarkBT_52 off the old forum who described the F40 as one of the most overrated cars ever.
It’s also one of the stupidest comments ever. It’s a Nathan-esque “I don’t like it because it’s popular” thing, preferring the 288GTO because it makes you seem more interesting.
What utter utter bollocks. You may not agree with me but you should know better than to accuse me of that!
You still a goth, yeah?

I've been reading car magazines for years before the F40 was released and for many years after, and that is the first I've ever seen of it ever being referred to as that. Can you provide source?

Think you are quite off base here.
